Hey guys,

So after selling my gaming PC (i5 4690k / Asus Maximus VII Ranger / Corsair Dominator Platinum 2x 4GB / EVGA GTX 970) because I didn't have time to game on it, and i needed portability so i used the money that i got from that PC to buy a Macbook Pro (i always wanted to have one 9_9) and since I do event photographie I was very happy with it, and still am.

But... I now i have some free time, and I want to game, but hey, I have a mac.

So, i managed to buy a Intel Xeon X5670 2.93GHz for 30€ (~$35) and a Asus P6x58D-E for 100€ (~$115).

And why the x58? Why not? It's cheap and it performs very nicely.

So then I bought a EVGA GTX 1080 SC ACX 3.0 for 600€(~$700{new}).

I have now 3 components for this build : CPU - Motherboard - GPU.

For the others components I'm thinking about :

Cooler : Noctua NH-D14 or BeQuiet! Dark Rock Advanced

Memory : Corsair Vengeance 2x 8GB Dual-Channel (because i couldn't find any Tri-Channel memory affordable ).

PSU : EVGA Supernova 750W G2L

Storage : Corsair Force LE Series 120 GB (i have also 3x 3TB drives lying around and a NAS at home)

Case : NZXT S340 Elite

Well it was supposed to be a budget build, but i let myself go a little bit.

I just have one concern, the motherboard is Tri-Channel, will there be any problem if i run the memory on Dual-Channel or Single-Channel? Or the only problem will be the speeds of memory?

Thanks !

as you are trying to build a X58 system i know who are the guys that is like your guide to the X58 ecosystem. @panther420 and @Zando Bob

ok so i am gonna talk about the components selection

first, the CPU-GPU-Motherboard combo is great. don't forget to overclock that chip to the 4GHz threshold or better, since that OC is gonna help minimalize the bottleneck

now cooling, i would suggest changing it up to a NH-U14S. Because a D14 can be an overkill, and can be a pain to install since it is big and be aware of the cooler clearance, but i guess if you want the D14 to get better temps, it's fine. the U14S will still be fine for OC-ing the chip, but if you go for the D14 you will have more headroom

for the ram that kit will be just fine, even that the fact it is dual channel. It will be like having a dual channel kit on a motherboard with 4 DIMM slots

also 550W is fine with this config, no need for 750W actually.

Mention me if you want to summon me sooner or later

Thanks for the reply !

Thanks for the suggestion on the cooler, i don't think that I saw it available. But i'll check again.

For the PSU i kinda of thought of it like an "investment" for the future. This x58 is not gonna last forever, so if in the future I change it (Motherboard-CPU), I have room for upgrade. Let's say an 1080 SLI setup or something along those lines.

I also have a BeQuiet! 500W power supply that was used on my "retired" NAS, and I don't know if it will be enough for this system. That's why I went a little bit "overkill" on the PSU side for the reasons that I stated above and for "fear" of the 500W not being powerful enough.

And to be honest the price difference between a 750W and 550W is like 40€ (~$45).

well i guess the price bump of the PSU is acceptable anyways, yea keep that 750W PSU. It is a good PSU too, which you can find out here. Also you can use a power hungry card too on your system

i think that 500W unit will be enough if you want to save some cash

This ^^^ I run mine off a 620W PSU, but then I'm also running a power hungry 980 Ti with my overclocked X5675. As for RAM, a 2x8GB kit should be fine, I run that same config with HyperX Fury/Savage (I forget which it is) RAM and it's fine, haven't had any problems (other than when I bumble around trying to figure out what overclocking settings do).

Hey guys, do you think that the Corsair CMZ12GX3M3A1600C9 Vengeance 12GB (3x4GB)  will be compatible with the Asus P6x58D-E motherboard ? Or should i go with Corsair CMD8GX3M2A1600C9 Dominator Platinum 8GB (2x4GB) ?

what is cheaper? if the triple kit is the cheaper one or the price difference is little (say $5) then get it, you will utilize the triple channel support
