That's one of the reason why we are making a push for the Cloud in general. Dealing with hardware/software licenses upgrade is a pita for a normal SMB. It generally means a lot of money and downtimes plus whatever hardware problems that might happen down the line.
 

You got a good point, server platforms need to be compatible before you can even think about switching. No one upgrades OEM servers CPUs. You better have a really good reason to do it if you need too. If I don't do it in standalone OEM tower servers (unless it's to drop a second one in it), I hardly imagine anyone doing it in datacenters.

I came to the 2 year figure from my personal experience in schools where they were constantly changing all notebook and tablet fleets and using their servers for far more than storage.  Over the last 5 years schools have gone from basic storage servers to full office back ends with parent portals(things like care monkey integration), Proxy services and Department integration for whole networks. I don't personally know the technical details, although I can say there was one school that installed a mac server solely to cater for teachers using apple, it was apparently to hard to integrate device with mac os back then .    On top of that the usual firewalls and filters etc.     It wouldn't surprise me if bean counters were trying to push server upgrades out to 6 years (save a lot of money (at the expense of something else)), but I have no first hand experience of this.

People like Cray and HPE only want the cheapest and best option. Doesn't matter about reputation or fanboy. They fill the clients need for the cheapest and if AMD is the cheapest AMD it is
