I'm a new member and this is my first post. I'm 42 and am somewhat ashamed that I have never attempted a pc build before. I've always been a console gamer. My kids have started to take over the PS4's, so I figured it's time to move to a pc.

I only have a single 1080p monitor for now, but I plan to add a 1440p soon. I also already have a mouse, keyboard, and speakers. I don't have a specific budget in mind, but somewhere around the price of the parts list I am posting. I don't really care about RGB, but I added some Halo's at the request of my wife. I also only wanted RGB that would work with Aura. Let me know how it looks and any suggestions you may have. Thank you.

1. The cooler is amazing for quiet operation. If you want something from bequiet grab a dark rock pro 4.

2. 1800x is not faster with the exception of productivity and streaming. 2700x is very close to the 8700k, but is beaten out in singlethreaded games and trade blows in heavily multithreaded games. It beats the 8700k im productivity.

3. Dont pair a 1800x with a b350 board. X370 and a 1700 or X470 and a 2700 is a more balanced buy for future upgrades. At essentially no performance loss

Like there is nothing wrong with the combo. It is just wiser to get a 1700 since it can be overclocked to a 1800x and then a X370 or X470 board (like the fatality board from ASrock).

The newer boards are better suited for OC and not to mention newer CPUs in the future.

True, but you dont want bad VRMs powering future CPUs. B350 boards are in general bad overclockers.

X470 also comes with features such as Store MI and precision boost 2 and XFR2 to utilize future CPUs without needing a overclock, while performing better in singlethreaded games.

Lets not diverge from the topic at hand

@gmentals your build looks fine. Add an 3TB HDD from seagate for mass-storage. If this is a pure gaming build there is very little i would change.

yeah but i dont overclock

the pciis a beast and handles anything i want it for, so overclocking isnt needed

im sick of people like you jumping in hey do this! right after i start helping someone, so it seems im done here

Going to want to use StoreMI with X470

I was considering Cooler Master, as their RGB works with Aura. I don't want a white case though. I could wait a few weeks for the H500M. I also like the Phanteks Evolv X, but it won't be available until August. I'm also not sure about AIO's, but I am considering them.

Everything I've read suggests that it is a solid cooler. It is pricey, but I plan to overclock. It seems that most adequate air coolers are in the same price range. I would prefer to stick with Intel. I had a few AMD based laptops in the past and was never impressed. All 3 of them have failed. I do realize that they are much more competitive now, but I want to try Intel.

Add an 1-4 TB HDD for mass storage. 500GB doesnt last very long. Are you only planning on using it as a gaming rig or do you plan on doing some productivity like streaming, video-editing etc?

Other than that it looks good

I forgot to list a 1TB drive that I already have. This will be primarily for gaming, web browsing, and lite photo editing.

If youre going to be gaming at 1440p, get a ryzen 2600 and use the money to buy a 1080ti instead

i could get the 1080ti anyway, but I don't think it's worth the current pricing. I would still want an Asus, so about $820. By the time I get a 1440p, new gpu's will be out.

I mean you could buy a better monitor right now with the build I posted and be perfectly fine for 1440p 144hz gaming or light 4k 60hz gaming.

I have no interest in AMD, but I appreciate your suggestion. It's not that I don't have the money, I could by one now. I just want to start with the monitor I have to see if I even like PC gaming.

If you're not sure why don't you just spend like $400 on an APU system to get you started? Will do 1080p pretty alright.

No problem.

If you were doing streaming or videoediting or even heavy photo editing i would grab a 2700x, but for your workload and lean towards gaming a 8700k will work just fine.

Thanks. That is basically what I have read. I probably don't even need a 8700K, but f#$k it.
