Does a 2nd SSD improve performance?

A benefit of two SSD's is that they can both be running at once.  Have you found this to be substantially better overall for managing files, installations, video editing and/or DAW work?  In a practical sense.

PC Build: R5-1600.  Scythe Mugen 5.  GTX 1060.  120 GB SSD.  1 TB HDD.  FDD Mini C.  8 GB RAM (3000 MHz).  Be Quiet Pure Wings 2.  Capstone-550.  Deepcool 350 RGB.

Peripherals: Qisan Magicforce (80%) w/ Gateron Blues.  Razer Naga Chroma.  Lenovo 24" 1440p IPS.  PS4 Controller.

Audio: Focusrite (Solo, 2nd), SM57, Triton Fethead, AKG c214, Sennheiser HD598's, ATH-M50x, AKG K240, Novation Launchkey

Wishlist: MP S-87, iPad, Yamaha HS5's, more storage

You mean in RAID0? They'd have to be the same drive, and often it's more beneficial to simply get the next size up.

Not RAID.  In general, having a 2nd SSD so you can run twice as many storage-based processes.

 

(i.e. install two programs at once without any speed loss)

I don't really get what you're saying. I don't think most processes are slowed down by storage bandwidth. It'd be a pretty niche scenario.

RAM, CPU etc still come into play.

I don't think that's true, having more SSDs (not in raid 0) won't give you extra performance.

Having 1 SATA SSD specifically for video editing is useful because that uses a lot of bandwidth and can slow down the system if it's also the boot drive. If the SSD is an NVMe SSD or outright a PCIe SSE (900p anyone?) then having an extra SSD only gives extra space, but not extra speed

If you had an SSD only for the OS and applications already installed, then sure. But if you had a big enough SSD to do all of that already, then no.

 

However note that only loading performance improves. If the application isn't touching storage, it doesn't affect the performance of the application at all.
