I7 8700 vs I7 8700k vs R7 2700 vs R7 2700x

I am building a computer and I'm stuck on what to choose as my CPU. I have everything else chosen except the MoBo and CPU. I am going to be playing games and streaming from this computer.  Any help would be greatly appreciated. I was leaning towards the 2700x but I wanted opinions. I also want this to last me 3-5 years. I have a 1080ti already

r7 2700 for gaming and streaming.

Extra 2 cores will help alot with the transcoding.

My opinion is that a 8700k doesnt do worse than a 2700x in streaming but leads considerably in gaming.

CPU: Ryzen 7 5800x3D | MoBo: MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk | RAM: G.Skill F4-3600C15D-16GTZ @3800CL16 | GPU: RTX 2080Ti | PSU: Corsair HX1200 |

Case: Lian Li 011D XL | Storage: Samsung 970 EVO M.2 NVMe 500GB, Crucial MX500 500GB | Soundcard: Soundblaster ZXR | Mouse: Razer Viper Mini | Keyboard: Razer Huntsman TE Monitor: DELL AW2521H @360Hz |

It doesn't do worse, but for gaming and encoding, I think the 2700X might be better suited.

Main PC:

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X • Noctua NH-D15 • MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk • 2x8GB G.skill Trident Z Neo 3600MHz CL16 • MSI VENTUS 3X GeForce RTX 3070 OC • Samsung 970 Evo 1TB • Samsung 860 Evo 1TB • Cosair iCUE 465X RGB • Corsair RMx 750W (White)

Peripherals/Other:

ASUS VG27AQ • G PRO K/DA • G502 Hero K/DA • G733 K/DA • G840 K/DA • Oculus Quest 2 • Nintendo Switch (Rev. 2)

Laptop (Dell XPS 13):

Intel Core i7-1195G7 • Intel Iris Xe Graphics • 16GB LPDDR4x 4267MHz • 512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD • 13.4" OLED 3.5K InfinityEdge Display (3456x2160, 400nit, touch).

Got any questions about my system or peripherals? Feel free to tag me (@bellabichon) and I'll be happy to give you my two cents.

PSA: Posting a PCPartPicker list with no explanation isn't helpful for first-time builders :)

they are really close, siliconlottery decides the winner in gaming+streaming...

So im going to elaborate it again. Based on Gamers Nexus in depth review.

https://www.gamersnexus.net/hwreviews/3287-amd-r7-2700-and-2700x-review-game-streaming-cpu-benchmarks-memory/page-2

9_stream-pubg-ryzen2-viewer.png

This chart is showing severe frame drops of %Frames Encoded. Even though just to remember. The 2700x is also dropping frames for your viewers at 12Mbps 1080p60 Medium x264 OBS preset, which is a no go from begin with. You dont want your stream to drop frames regardless of percentage. Further is written below the chart:

Quote

Notice, however, that the 8700K crumbles when pressed with H264 Medium and 12Mbps encoding. We end up at 32.4% of all frames delivered, meaning that the stream drops 70% of frames. We’ll show those videos side-by-side now (see video). We overclocked the 8700K to see if performance could meet the stock 2700X, and found that it still under-delivered at 84.2% of all frames. This disparity is partially a result of the 2 fewer cores, and partially a result of scheduling. More resources were spent on the game than OBS. This can be rectified with manual affinity and priority tuning for OBS, but it’s extra work for the streamer.

From my own testing when this affinity and priority tuning is done the 8700k @5GHz, 1080p60 Medium OBS x264 preset achieves a 0% frameloss in Frames Encoded. This result beats the 2700x.

As we know overclocking the 2700x can be sufficient but for the most part isnt. Its "Auto-Overclock" features already pushing the CPU almost to its limit.

So either way, if you arent lucky enough to get your 8700k to 5GHz (10-15% chance) you also might not be able to Stream at 1080p60 Medium OBS x264 preset either. Or If you get lucky with your 2700x you might get a sufficient overclock out of it making it possible to also have a 0% loss in Frames Encoded. But you for sure can do 1080p60 Faster with both, without any viewer side frameloss, only difference is the 8700k will net you more FPS on your side of things.

honestly there's no reason at all to pickup the 8700k right now, the 2700x either beats it in some things or gets really damn close to it in other things, it's just a really well rounded CPU.

no......with the 1700x/1800x atleast there was a reason to pickup the 8700k, but now it's just too close to matter, i've seen some bullshit benchmarks don't worry.

well everything a matter of usecase, if you are 4k gaming a R3 will also be very sufficient.. or any other up to 7years old CPU...

The 2700x is a great cpu but there is a reason to get the 8700k over the 2700x. That would be for 1080 high fps gaming. Of you aren't doing that then get the 2700x in all honesty as it is the better value. If you just want the best gaming rig out there and money is of little concern then the 8700k is also a good option. I have the 2700x and it is a great cpu but I also realise where the 8700k would benefit me and where my current cpu benefits me.

thats true about 1080p gaming, and there's no issue with getting the 8700k :) i'm just saying the 2700x is a better deal these days because it's so well rounded, i have the 8700k myself and i'm not complaining about it :D
