I’m wondering if server CPUs and motherboards can run non ECC ram, and if so, will that increase performance (even if only a little) just by the fact that it’s not ECC (frequency and size being equal)? It’s my understanding that ECC ram runs a bit slower, and for what I’m doing I don’t need it and I’d rather have the extra speed.

 ECC is usefull for virtual machines, when you have a lot of them it really makes it more stable, in normal use no sense, there are no fast ecc memories as there is no need for them, go with standard ddr memory

Both the xeon and the motherboard need to support non-ecc ram.

If one of them needs ECC or registered memory it will not work with anything else.

ECC is fine, it's an optional extra like Gsync. If something doesnt support it, you lose the function. Only registered or buffered memory causes problems.

I'm running a Xeon. As long as the motherboard supports non-ECC RAM, you're fine. You can't mix ECC and Non-ECC RAM though, your computer won't POST.
