Because the 8700 is a locked CPU and unless you have a Z370 series board, you can't overclock the memory while your friend doesn't have those limits and can overclock his RAM.

Because all Ryzen CPUs are unlocked and support both CPU and RAM OC unless you got the A320 board.

With Intel you have to have both unlocked CPU and Z motherboard to be able to use anything above JEDEC spec.

Okay, so the i7 is much more expensive and has poor performance in terms of ram?

Thats why. The motherboard can only support maximum up to 2666mhz and is locked to anything beyond that.

Not really, no. It has much higher clocks and single core IPC performance over the 1200 to offer better FPS where it matters

2666 vs 3000 RAM is like a couple of nanoseconds difference in terms of performance and some imperceptible difference in terms of FPS

I have a Core i7-6700 locked processor and I've been able to use DDR4-2667 RAM on it, but I have a motherboard that supports that speed as well. So I don't think you need an unlocked processor, you just need a motherboard that supports it (which does appear to be only the Z or X series chipsets on Intel's side)

the OP is also using 2667 ram, they are wondering why they can't use 3000. Can you use 3000mhz ram on your setup?

My board is compatible with it, but my RAM is only good for up to 2667.
