I am newer to PC gaming. I used to be a console gamer, until I decided to use a "gaming PC" that my family had. Turns out it wasn't as powerful as I thought (it has trouble getting 60 FPS on CS:GO on lowest settings). I did some research, and discovered that my GPU was basically useless. After looking on a few websites and researching some, I found 2 GPU's that interested me: The GT 1030 and a GTX 470 I found on Craigslist. The GTX 470 supposedly performs better (gpuboss.com) but I still don't want to jump the gun because the GPU is so old and may not be supported anymore. Can anyone help me out?

The 1050 is a solid GPU for the money (if you get a good price) - but I would never even consider anything less than that.

What GPU do you have now?

By "research" I hope you mean playing games? Not reading online forums? :P

I would highly suggest you save up a little more and get a better card, even second hand.

You'll more than likely end up regretting getting something such as a 1030 within a year mate.

please no. Never ever use that.

I'd opt for the GT 1030 (GDDR5) over the GTX 470. Significantly less power consumption being the main focus. Assuming this PC doesn't have the available power connectors for a GTX 470, the GT 1030 is the obvious choice.

May not performs as well since it has a narrower bus width but it's a far more efficient card.

gpuboss is pretty much useless because it just uses the technical data of the cards. The two are about as fast as eachother, if price is the same the 1030 is a better choice due to reduced power consumption, but as someone above said you may want to increase your budget to something like a 1050.

What are the other specs of the system? There's little sense in adding a good GPU to a toaster.

GTX 470 : Big, Loud, Hot & Power hungry

Don't support DX12 natively.

1030 is newer and more efficient.

Games fps roughly the same, why get a dinosaur card?

Retro aesthetic probably. I'm planning to retire my 780 this year, but I might stick it in another rig from that era just for the heck of it.

What are your specs?

the GT 1030 can be a wonderful card to give a new breath of life in any old system, however you MUST make sure it is the GDDR5 variant and not the DDR4 as the performance gap between them is monstrous!

If you're unsure, spend a litle more money and go with 1050.
