I was supplied by my firm with an AMD A10-5750M laptop. My issue is when running excel and our auditing programs like caseware the laptop is extremely slow and sometimes freezes.

Now my question is what processor should one opted for that would work faster and without killing the bank to much?

I am considering the 7th gen laptops and leaning to the i5-7300hq, but will it work better or is it even overkill and should one go for the u processors?

Depending on your budget I'd spring for an LG gram or a Dell XPS 13/15

But coffee lake will probably be a better bet anyway.

Since coffee lake is out, I'd buy a laptop with an 8th gen intel CPU, they absolutely destroy last gen CPUs.

CPU: Intel Core i7-950 Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R CPU Cooler: NZXT HAVIK 140 RAM: Corsair Dominator DDR3-1600 (1x2GB), Crucial DDR3-1600 (2x4GB), Crucial Ballistix Sport DDR3-1600 (1x4GB) GPU: ASUS GeForce GTX 770 DirectCU II 2GB SSD: Samsung 860 EVO 2.5" 1TB HDDs: WD Green 3.5" 1TB, WD Blue 3.5" 1TB PSU: Corsair AX860i & CableMod ModFlex Cables Case: Fractal Design Meshify C TG (White) Fans: 2x Dynamic X2 GP-12 Monitors: LG 24GL600F, Samsung S24D390 Keyboard: Logitech G710+ Mouse: Logitech G502 Proteus Spectrum Mouse Pad: Steelseries QcK Audio: Bose SoundSport In-Ear Headphones

But would you go for the hq or U processor?

Well you see my budget and maximum I can spend is $799 but lessor is alway best. And I do not want to go overkill or something.

You might be able to buy a Dell Insprion or a Lenovo Thinkpad, They are normally built somewhat strong and they are meant for office work.

HQ processors are normally better than U (ULV) processors

Depends on the number of cores the U processor has.

I will have to buy it out of my own pocket and yes the work will let me use my own. I just have to load the firms software on it!

They are normally Gaming/High end CPUs but certainly not overkill, They will be very snappy with most tasks.

That helps a lot! Also rhe i7 7700hq is it worth the money over the i5 7300hq?

I'd say invest in the best you can, So yea it's probably worth it, I'd look at 8xxx series processors if possible though.

KBL-R should be enough for you usage. CFL-H is overkill IMO. Note that both CPUs need some tuning to perform properly (undervolting for instance)

Spec is a thing, however buying laptop isn't just spec only, there are many aspects like build quality, input devices, display quality, battery life etc

the real question is why audit :) no disrespect. take that leap from audit to transaction/m&a advisory or investment banking

Go with 8th gen because you'll save $100 and get more out of the cpu. Do you travel around a lot with it? Yes, then look at 14 inch and below and check out some 2 in 1 models.

Yes I travel around a lot, all out work is outside of office, but I will sacrefice portability for a power!!!

You see in South Africa we have a 3 year degree and then 1 year honours and 3 year articles at an audit firm which include 2 board exams you need to pass to become a CA(SA) ( charted accountant). After that you can go coperate or anything. At our firm we do audit, Advisory and taxation so your exposure is very broad.

But in order to become CA you need to complete that cycle and I am now have way with my articles and one board exam away!

Throttlestop for CPU undervolting, voltage frequency curve for GPU undervolting (via MSI Afterburner), Intel XTU for TDP (PL1) limit tuning
