8700k vs 2700x

So the long story short is I'm running a 4790k and have some money burning a hole in my pocket, I'm struggling to decide between the 8700k and the 2700x though.

 

I play mostly games, but would like to stream more as I have a consistent work schedule now. I'm not really concerned with being able to run games as both are capable cpus and they'll be paired with a 1080ti, but I thought I'd ask before jumping in headfirst on either.

 

Also, how is the 2700x with RAM? Is it still finicky like when ryzen launched or have they worked that out.

 

I do plan to overclock both atleast slightly when I get them if that makes a difference. 

 

Motherboard I plan on getting would be the asus Strix with both as it matches my gpu

2700x doesnt need a overclock with XFR 2 and precision boost 2. Ram isnt as finicky as vefore and most ddr4 3200 kits should work fine at cl16.(though tighter timings are better).

 

2700x is better on viewer-side but slightly worse on fps streamer side. 8700K is the other way around. Ill refer you to a gamer nexus article:

The 2700x is better at high bitrate but the 8700k streaming performance is about the same at lower bitrate while gaming usually slightly better. I would look at gamer nexus video on the subject. They can give you a good idea of what the difference is.

But, if most streams won't accept more than 60fps, does that really matter? I mean, possible depending on the game and the stream quality, but I feel like there wouldn't be an issue pushing 60 fps on stream.

then you can go up on stream quality and higher bitrate. like the difference between them is negligable. the edge is that 2700x has a better sqedualer for streaming.

8700k is just faster than the 2700x.

2700x cant match the gaming performance of a stock 8700k even when overclocked on air/water. (due to still very limited clockspeeds)

8700k is also having headroom to OC to even further increase the gap.

 

2700x has theoretically less framedrops at 1080p60 streaming on medium OBS preset, but its irrelevant,

because having framedrops is having framedrops and thats why this preset is not viable for every game with neither CPU, while gaming on it.

 

Its up to you, only reason to join team RED is to support the underdog in your case.
