Dell Optiplex too small?

In my previous post I mentioned I planned to upgrade from an old dell workstation.

I planned on getting a Dell Optiplex (either 3/7/990 or 30/70/9010) but before I bought it I wanted to know if my Graphics Card would fit.

It's a GTX 670 DirectCU II with a length of 10.7 inches.

@Mr. Darkwraith It will not fit.

Speaking from experience, you can fit about 8.25" until you run into SATA ports. Not to mention the riveted hard drive cage after that.

According to Detailed engineering spec, they say 6.6" of clearance.

Link to specification, See page 19 under System expansion slots > PCIe X16 (BLUE) > MT (Mini Tower)

I bet you could mount the HDD bays vertically and get the room you need.  Might take a bit of drilling to make some new holes but it could work.

Alright then. If the Optiplexi won't fit the card, what are some prebuilts that will, AND have an upgradeable PSU?

Lenovo ThinkCentre M81 is a good choice. Accepts ATX Power supplies and ANY length video card. It will block Sata 2/4 of the SATA ports on the motherboard, but you still use one of them with a right angle SATA connection.

Example: (Scroll down to the pics of the inside of the case)

You have plenty of cable, it would reroute just fine.  If you are looking at another prebuilt and haven't bought yet then get one that will fit the card.

Yes, if you really need more than 3 ports.

You can get this one for 3 dollars if you use the promo code on Yesterdays email deal and send in the mail in rebate.

They do make legacy PCI to SATA 1.0 and maybe even 2.0 controller cards. The cheapest ones are like 15 bucks give or take.

I guess that'll work. All my drives are SATA2 anyway.

But there aren't any M81s under 150 on ebay and I already have a large percent of the components (HDD, GPU, PSU)

Damn :/

This Lenovo M72e for $130 seems to check all the boxes?? long PCIe cards (will block 2/3 SATAs, but one of the blocked ones can be used with right angle connection) AND has PCIe X16 and X1's

Not sure where you're going to fit all those drives though.

Come to think of it, at least one SATA port with a right angle connector would fit under the video card.

Unfortunately I need at least 8GB of RAM. A lot of the games I have (A Hat in Time, Dark Souls 3) use over 4GB of RAM.

See if you could find one with a smaller (or no) hard drive with 8GB of RAM

You could sell the existing hard drive and put the money toward an additional 4GB? Its a lot easier to do that then to find a pre-built with the exact config you need.

You could get some new on Newegg for $30

I guess. My actual price limit is 150 but I set 130 so I'd have money left over for the PCI(e) to SATA connector.

Would an X58 workstation (e.g. Lelnovo S20 or GaycHP Z400)
