Philosophies vary on this.  Your gains are never guaranteed but the potential upside on an 8600k is pretty good (around 5ghz).  If you've got the cooler and motherboard for it already I'd just go for it, but I've also gotten CPU's in the past with the intention of ocing later.

I would look into it and do it, with whatever you are doing overclocking is just a nice benefit. Keep your temperature in check and know how to check for stability and you will be able to overclock no problem. Even on stock coolers you should be able to get small overclocks. In my experience it will be most noticeable in gaming, multi-tasking, and boot times. I personally overclock everything I buy religiously and recommend it to others as long as they make sure they are careful. Don't raise your voltage without knowing what is unsafe, and know what your safe maximum temperature is and try to aim lower than that.

 

Edit: It is also worth it to see what is your usual bottleneck, MSI Afterburner is what I use to monitor this. If you see that your GPU or CPU is near 100% usage most of the time in high load situations, that is your bottleneck. I would overclock your bottleneck first to get the most out of it and then move onto the part that is not the bottleneck; This may save you some of your time, as once your bottleneck is overclocked you may see your other part doesn't need one.

I myself wont be doing it in a rush because you're graphics card is limiting game performance more often than not, but it's reasonable to do it for fun.

 

Iwould probably undervolt the thing though, then admire the low temperatures.

it all depends on your cooling solution, cuz you don't really lose anything from overclocking, except a bit of lifetime on your cpu, but that shouldn't be too much tbh

Tho with a 1060 you won't really gain alot, as the extra performance from your cpu will be limited by your gpu

This is always good too. Especially on your GTX 1060, I have a 1070 and it can hit 2GHz under 1.0v, Pascal cards are very good performers with underclocking. I would try adjusting your voltage in MSI Afterburner:

     In Afterburner: Hit ctrl+f, click the voltage you want to test, put it to the OC you want, make sure you put every voltage higher than your OC(up to 1100mv) to a frequency lower or equal to your OC or else it will go to higher voltage, then apply (you may have to check 'unlock voltage control' in Afterburner's settings)

From 2.6ghz to 4.35ghz i can say yes! more than 2x performance increase.
