I'm relocating to a rural area, trying to get a better comparison of what my internet will be like out there.

At the moment I have cable internet - 25mbps dl w/ 8 ul. Speeds are totally fine for gaming/streaming.

The area I'm moving to will only allow for DSL or Satellite. Downside with satellite is the high latency - therefore I doubt I can game.

The DSL package that was offered was 25mbps dl w/ 3 ul, they are also in the closest rural city which is 6-7 miles away.

How does the latency compare versus cable? Since I would be 6-7 miles from the isp, that could mean my latency would be decent?

Ping between ADSL and Cable are very similar. It's going to be more about the individual ISP's setup and how many hops you wind up with than about the technology behind it.

ADSL is harder to get high speeds with (at least here in Canada) but at the same speeds should give you very comparable performance to Cable, possibly being even more stabile.

i have recently done the opposite from you, and i can tell you that you well actually possibly have LOWER latency due to reduce traffic from being in a less populated area.

If you were actually 6-7 miles from the DSL Node, you wouldn't even get 5 Mbps download, let alone 25. So either there is a remote closer to your home, or the ISP is lying about the speeds you will get.

So, assuming there's a node within reasonable distances (3-4 miles, as the cable runs, which is not necessarily in a straight line), then the latency of DSL is similar to Cable - you should see no major differences there.

In fact, in the old days, DSL typically had better latency than Cable - but that's not really the case anymore.

from all the exsperencies I have ever had rural areas will have shittier internet since its not really super profitable for a company to run fiberoptic lines out into boom fuk Egypt, in some cases u cant even get a normal isp you will have to get a wireless one that uses satelites. but the internet speed really all depends on how rural your talking about and what state your living in and if the isp's really haven't spent money running good service out there. id go on the websites of the isp's youll think youll be using for service type in the address of a house out in the area that ur moving and see what is offered to get a idea of what youll be living with
