XPS 13 won't stay off

EunSoo

Hello, I have been having an issue with my Dell XPS recently and in the past where it just straight up won't stay off. What I mean by this is that if I tell it to shut down, it will pretend to but will just turn off for a second but when I touch the trackpad, it will automatically prompt me with the screen you get in Windows 10 when you wake it from sleep before the login screen. And while it is in this state of pretending to be off but not actually (mainly when the lid is closed) it is clearly doing something. What I mean by this is that if I put my ear to the bottom, I can hear some coil whine and the bottom of the laptop is never not warm. As a result, battery life has tanked and I can't put anything heat-sensitive next to it in my backpack even when the thing has been shut down and closed. Any suggestions on what is the cause? This problem is really infuriating.

Specs:

Dell XPS 13 (9350) - i7 6560u, Iris 540 graphics, 16gb RAM, 512gb Hynix NVMe drive, 3200*1800 touchscreen variant. Also, I'm using the 'Dell' power profile.

Whoa, I dint know the XPS 13" had an Iris graphics model, that is actually pretty sweet.

As far as your problem goes, try running a system integrity scan with SFC/ Scannow in Terminal (command prompt)

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-update/system-file-check-sfc-scan-and-repair-system-files/bc609315-da1f-4775-812c-695b60477a93

Also check your power plan to see if there is anything that might cause the machine to wake up or prevent it from shutting down.

Also what happens if you just hold the power button and force a shut down? It could be an SMC issue in which case you should perform an SMC reset.

(consult your user manual for how to do that)*
