Hello everyone! 

 

I recently upgraded my Plex Server, I had been encoding my movies with my laptop i7-7700hq, and then I would move it over the network to my always on plex server, which had an i3. I was tired of bringing more then one device into it, and also with tying up my laptop for hours at a time. 

 

So here is my question- This new computer is a Ryzen 5 1600, This computer will be on 24 / 7 and it will be used for a plex server all the time, and will encode 2-10 blurays a week generally. I use Handbrake. I have it currently with a h100i v2 with stock speeds / voltages. I am currently ok with how long it takes to encode a movie, about 70-90 minutes per bluray rip. But I always feel like I can shave that down a little. 

 

Would it be better to overclock and save a little time per encode, or leave it stock with low temps and quite since this will be on 24/7?

I'd clock it to 3.7GHz. That seems to be the point in which Zen is most efficient.

If you can OC, then OC, its free performance. Note that Ryzen gets alot out of RAM OC'ing also.

 

OCing doesnt have to result in higher temps, no increase or only a very small increase in votlage can yield an OC, and RAM OC'ing is free for the most part of any heat increase for the overall system.

You can overclock it if just to speed up the encoding. Keep an eye on the temps though when bumping up the voltage and don't be surprised if you have to dial it down because it BSOD mid-operation.

Might as well. It's not dangerous. Just keep the cpu vcore below 1.35 (as low as possible) and you'll be able to get atleast 3.7ghz.
