Can my phone be hacked/unlocked?

I just moved to Japan and got a smartphone. It's a Kyocera KYL21 Digno. I went with an Android phone because I heard that they are easier to unlock and I would like to use this phone once I return to the USA. I've Googled the topic but I'm still not sure which is more important the phone or the OS.

Also, is it possible to reinstall Android? This phone has the Japanese version installed with the text set to English. I would like to replace it with an English version if possible.

you can root the phone , but i really don't know how to do that
