New battery worth it ?

I've been using the Schenker/Clevo xmg p502 since quiet some time now (bought it from ebay for a very good price).

Specs:

i7 3740qm

8Gb 1600MHz DDR3

128Gb SSD

750Gb HDD

I really like using this laptop e.g. at my girlfriends house or at "lan partys" with my friends where we usually play lighter games (some rts, rocket league, overwatch) that run very well and smooth on this dated but still powerful laptop. The laptop is working fine, however it is certainly very old by todays standards and so are the components. E. g. the ssd was used for around 24000 hours, the hdd for 14000 hours. The ssd wrote about 10Tb in total, the hdd doesn't display this. If one of the drives fail it should be very easy to replace it since the laptop is quiet thick and hast a lot of quick accessable maintainance slots. The battery life has been very poor ever since i got it. I know that the hardware is very power hungry and i am also aware that this laptop wasn't built to last all day on a single charge, however HWinfo is reporting 64% battery wear and i think this info could be true. On power saving mode with nvidia optimus, i am able to get around 1 hour of web browsing/video watching out of a single charge. I have researched current battery prices for the xmg p502 and they retail for about 65-100€ new with 1 year warranty here in germany. The battery is also hot-swapable. So before i go out and buy one i want to hear from you guys if you think that it's worth upgrading such an old laptop. Thanks for your opinions!

that's a really good laptop. it is a clevo p150em so you have a socketed cpu and a mxm gpu. It's worth it

My battery lasts for like an hour - an hour and a half, and i just tote around my charger.

Up to you. I think that price is great tbh.

How often are you going to use it with just battery? If most of the time, then it might be worth it. If not, why bother

I would probably start using it for daily office/university stuff, since when the laptop is plugged in the fans tend to spin up very aggressivly. Cpu even gets to around 95° in Gta 5 but there's really not much i can do about it, already running it on a cooling pad most of the time. Things like that i wouldn't have to bring my charger when going to the printer etc.

you need to repaste cpu and gpu with a good thermal compound

My laptop battery died a while ago, but I just charge it straight to the wall and removed the battery.

If anything, it's just mildly inconvenient, but if you bring it everywhere and you don't want to run the risk of not having a power socket nearby, look for a battery reseller.

Okay so i just replaced both the cpu and gpu therman paste and i saw a significant drop in temps under load. The idle temp didn't change all that much since the fan runs from very slow to off in idle -> 40-55° in idle. Under heavy lot i am not exceeding 85° now which is almost a 10° down from the stock thermal paste. The thermal paste was pretty solid and spread poorly, this makes me guess that it hasn't been replaced before and i doubt the owner before me had the knowledge to do so.

check also the fans because dust could be an obstacle for the air flow

Already did before applying the thermal paste. There wasn't too much in it, but definitely enough to lower the airflow a bit. Cleaned it all properly and it's working great! Also due to the lower temps in general the laptop is much quieter now, the fans stopped spinning up very aggressivly when just opening a few programs. I am absolutely in love with this laptop. It has all the ports one could ever need and everything is so modular. Really reminds me of the good old laptops days where nothing was soldered and hidden under the keyboard or something which i experienced in a hp pavilion which i sold recently due to that.

You can also google for a program that lets you adjust the fan speed manually depending on the load. I for example rather prefer a few more degrees than having a noisy laptop

Already tried that however i didn't find any that actually does something.

Very cheap arctic mx2. I know it's probably not the best one but i always served me well over the years. Using better thermal paste wouldn't change much probably. It's still a laptop and the main bottleneck cooling wise is still the fan and the heatsink probably.

Artic mx2 offers only 5.6 W/mK  of thermal conductivity and that's not so good for laptops.

check for

-Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut 12.5 W/mK
-Phobya NanoGrease Extreme 16W/mk

they are much better

Yes i know, but do you really think it would make a significant difference using better paste? The mx2 has always performed quiet well for me, i'm happy with the current results however if better paste would lower the temps by another 10° i would definitely do that.

I think another 5°/6° lower could be a good result with TGK but for 10°+ you need LM. Did you make a stress test of your system?

I  ran cinebench and firestrike a couple of times, i don't have time for a full stress test right now, but i will do that in the future and report back. I will probably do some extended gaming tests too since that tends to be more realistic espacially for a laptop.

Just another quick question i got. I just found out that HWInfo64 shows the battery wear level. For the current battery it displays 63% (which basically means it's almost dead right?). Is this percentage remotely accurate so that i can expect more than double the battery life compared to what i have right now ?
