Crossfire 7970GHz or Upgrade?

Crazywink

Hey guys, to start, I'm new to these forums, but have been watching Linus' videos for awhile now. :)

So my question is whether I should crossfire my current Sapphire 7970 GHz Edition or if I should upgrade to a 290.. I figure it will be about to the same price if I sell my current card compared to just buying a second card.

I've heard that AMD's new drivers have added better Crossfire performance, so that's why I'm considering it.

If you do say Crossfire, what should I crossfire it with, another 7970GHz or a 280?

Thanks in advance guys. :)

Crossfire with a 280x.

Would be a really good addition in my opinion.

well, you won't be buying AMD anything if you're smart for a while. 280x's are about 100$ over their MSRP, 290's are $100-200 over their MSRP, and the same follows for 290x's with the litecoin mining explosion going on right now. Sucks, but as of right now, as a normal gamer/enthusiast, your only REAL option without just overpaying for no reason, is to go to nvidia

Do you game on higher resolutions than 1920x1080? If so I don't think you'd need to upgrade anytime soon, last I checked 7970 GHZ still get ~60 fps in every game

Yeah, the prices are ridiculous right now. My only problem with going to Nvidia is that I would be going for a 780, which isn't much of a performance upgrade from the comparisons and reviews I've seen. Then the only other Nvidia option would be the 780 Ti which $700 isn't really in my budget for a graphic card right now. :/ Maybe I'll have to wait till the AMD prices come down or the 780 Ti is in my range.

I've got a 1440p monitor on it's way right now which is kind of why I want to upgrade soon-ish.

The 780 is quite ahead of the 7970 ghz, like 10-15 fps in most cases I believe, and the only problem is with upgrading to another 7970, is that they're ridiculously overpriced right now because of the miners.

You could try selling your 7970 and buying a 780 TI I'm sure you could find some miner to take it off you for well over what it's worth

I would wait and crossfire it with a 280x, or sell your 7970 while the prices are high and buy a 780 TI like Lays had suggested.

if you're sticking with 1080p, I'd reccomend a 780. There's a 30-40% performance increase and you get awesome features like shadowplay and gamestream. GPU's aren't just about the power anymore.

Thats a bit of a high estimate, and he's not going to be playing at 1080p as he said. Twin 7970's beat a 780ti in the majority of applications and AMD frame pacing is only getting better.

I'm also playing on 1440p, and I get 50-60fps on all games including crysis 3 and battlefield

I went overboard previously and had 3x HD7970's in three way CF mode, when three way CF works, games run super smooth. Only snag is, not all games are TriFire friendly, so I find myself having to disable one card from time to time. Look for a used HD7970 Ghz Ed and CF it with your own. 2x HD7970's is effectively a HD7990 and a HD7990 owes all single GPU cards is just about every game I've seen....well, perhaps nV optimized TWIMTBP titles. Two way CF'ed HD7970 is still a force to be reckoned with...

I've since gotten rid of 2 of my HD7970's and bought 2x R9 290Xes.....no more three way CF for me.

Thanks for all the responses guys. :) I think I'm going to wait for a price drop on the 280x and go for it. :)

Yep, that'd be a prudent move....I didn't know you could CF a HD7970 with a R9 280X, live and learn...... ^_^
