Do you need to have a router to set up a LAN? Will all LAN connections go through the router?

Pyroven

The router tells the two computers where each other are and then they talk through the switch

If I connect two computers to a Gigabit switch, then the switch to a 100Mbps router, will transfers between the two computers be 1Gb or 100Mb?

I can't find a straight answer to this anywhere. I've found out that the Router attributes IP addresses but not really fully understood how integrated it is into LAN connections.

Thanks for any help

Simple answer would be if you just using the Gigabit witch then yes you get one Gbit between the pc but if you are using your router then you only get 100 mb.

A router is only needed if they aren't on the same subnet or if you need to leave the local network, otherwise they'll find each other through the switch via ARP. The switch will figure out where the computers are and switch the traffic accordingly.

Connections between the computers will be 1Gbit. Routers speed only comes into effect for internet connectivity, not local.

Wrong. If the router is only capable of 10/100, then it will only do up to 100Mbps of traffic.. no matter the speed of devices connected through it.

If you connect two gigabit computers to a gigabit switch and then drop a link to a 100meg router. The two computers will communicate through the switch to each other at gigabit speeds. The only time the 100 meg link comes into play is if the computers aren't on the same subnet or need leave the local network.

Router isn't transferring the data, switch is. Thus 1Gbit.

correct. a router is literally a WAN port and a LAN port. it only is there to route traffic from the WAN port to the LAN.
