Ok, so my laptop used to have windows 10 on it, i got rid of that because windows 10 was slow, crap and crashed every 5 minutes after going to 100% on CPU DISK and RAM. So i installed linux. ACPI was doing some funny stuff. somehow fixed that by restarting a few times. used it for a week. Then boom. I can connect to internet, but not actualy get internet. I can ping 8.8.8.8 but not www.google.com. Then i tried to boot to a live USB and boom. Now it cannot even boot into the USB or the OS. I paid a lot of money for this laptop and i want it to work. Please help

What distribution are you running? What laptop is it? The internet problems could be blamed on bad dns settings, but boot problems can't.

What laptop?

What does it do when you push the power button?

It is an MSI GL62M 7rd with an i5 7300HQ and a 1050. I'm running 17.10. I tried disabling ipv6 and that did nothing.

It loads to Ubuntu with the little loading balls, then gives an error that reads "A start job is running for Hold until boot process finishes up (58s / no limit)

and no other messages?

try booting in to recovery mode by pushing shift to get into grub on bootup.

Boot it from an external hard drive (on whatever os, just make sure its a clean copy). Reformat the built in drive, than reinstall the OS. Sounds like you need a fresh start.

i cannot boot into my ubuntu livecd. That is part of the problem... I also tried windows 7 but it gave me that stupid CD/DVD drive driver error. I want to get an m.2 SSD at some point and then dual boot 7 and 18.04 lts (when that comes out) on this laptop

A start job is running for what?

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

sudo chmod -R 000 /*

I have no idea. That is what it says... that is all i know. It is a fairly fresh install so...

Usually it says "a start job is running for xxx, Hold until boot process finishes up" - that gives a clue to what the problem is. If it doesn't, it could be your motherboard failing, especially if you can't boot from an external drive. If it's still under warranty, get it replaced. Try booting from the windows installer just in case it's linux specific.

I just got it back from having the headphone port fixed... and that wasn't cheap (i broke it not under warranty) if it is the motherboard failing... will it help if I just leave it running and see if anything happens?

Maybe eventually it will boot, but if it is your motherboard failing it will only get worse.

yep nothing happened after leaving it for 5 mins... What should I do now?

Again, if you can try windows or even a different linux distribution, but if nothing helps you'll need to have it replaced or fixed.

I tried windows 7 and all that happened was that it gave me an error about CD/DVD drivers. I had this laptop fixed last a couple of months ago by MSI themselves and it wasn't cheap, so if this is the motherboard failing, then I will expect them to give me the repair for free (if not pay me compensation!) IF this is the motherboard, I will never buy an MSI laptop again, even though I really like this one... when it works...

So you think it is hardware related...

Well considering it happens in the live installation too... it's very unlikely to be software.

Try contacting them, don't mention linux because they could use it as an excuse to blame it on you.

OK. I will try the folks at Ask Ubuntu first, but if they have no ideas... I might have to ship this thing back to Poland... So how would i say anything to them about the problem if it is mostly linux based?

If windows doesn't work then it's not a problem with linux, but they could use it as an excuse, so don't  mention it.

how would they use it as an excuse? Running an OS on a system would be completely within my rights as an end user wouldn't it?

Linux is hardware driven so if you're not careful about doing certain things it can be pretty easy to invoke a hardware failure through the OS. Have you tried installing Windows via USB to see if that gets you anywhere? or Linux from USB for that matter.

I only have USB... no CD/DVD anywhere on the laptop...
