With the adapter, you wouldn't be able to adjust fan speeds, but it's your call.

I'd personally go for an adapter unless it's being used as a cpu fan. (actually even then as long as temps are fine)

Dude look it that way :

 

-12 Volts fans => Full RPM, loud, but low temps

-5 Volts fans => medium temps

 

I recomend you 12cm fans at 5 volt, not the 8cm one : they are really loud and useless for "Good cooling" Ex : I've got (in total) 12 fans of 8 cm in my case instead of something like 4 or 5 12 cm fans, they are loud, but i'm OK with temps ;)
