Ubuntu Server versus Desktop

Is ubuntu server the same as ubuntu desktop just without the GUI?

I thought I might download the server version as a way of forcing myself to learn commands.

Ubuntu server doesn't have the GUI correct. But also server edition would have applications more geared toward server functionality instead of the user applications you would find on desktop.

Are there any stripped down versions of ubuntu desktop that just give you a command line?

worth noting on server ubuntu you are one command away from having a full GUI and having the server specific utilities. But you might be missing some things you'd want for a normal desktop PC.

The changes in server and desktop flavors for Linux are generally the applications installed by default and the kernel image. They are the same package source tho. So you can just install X on a server or whatever.

Any version of Ubuntu has terminal as far as I know. There is a stripped down version of Ubuntu called Lubuntu that is a lighter version you can run on lower spec hardware. You still get a GUI though.

Ubuntu Server has zero graphical interface,one is not installed, it is ONLY command line.

Ubuntu Desktop boots into a graphical interface.

just start using it, at work I started using it for downloading files and creating zips after doing DB changes.

Have you considered debian? Very similar to ubuntu and during install you can just *not* choose a desktop environment, sounds like it would be better for what you're looking for.

You could just install arch linux and you would learn commands and a few other things too

If that's the goal you should install Arch Linux or Gentoo

use the ubuntu netinstaller and simply deselect all the extra packages the ubuntu installer ask, you will have a simple vanilla installation with nothing but the basics. you can them install any specifics with apt.
