hello guys i have the i7 6700K and z170-A motherboard and i wanna do a small overclock since its my first time. i had the multi core enhacement before and i wasnt a fan of it since it was too much heat. i have the h100iv2 cooler. how can i do the overclock? where do i start in bios? by increasing the voltage?

See if this helps. I also have an h100iv2 and I haven’t found a cooling limit when it comes to OC on my 7700k. I keep it at 5GHz stable all the time, occasionally boosting to 5.3. With that cooler, you are golden

not planning to overclock it that much maybe 4.5ghz at best

my 6700k ended up at 4.5Ghz but only needed 1.29v so it's not bad but it's not the greatest thing ever, but neither is mine.

i have one more question man. when i set the 1.310 voltage in bios it shows on the hwmonitor that the voltage is 1.296? why is that happening?

That depends very much on what CPU it is. For a Ryzen CPU you have by far the best chip in the world but for an 8700k That's not even an overlclock. For Skylake that's about average

why when i set my voltage  in bios for 1.310 it shows on the hwmonitor its 1.296? o.O? whys that? it shows it lower than its

it's a 6700k, he posted a thread yesterday asking if it was worth upgrading from a 6700k to an 8700k.

Either a difference in sensor readings or you're seeing Vdroop. This happens because there is a distance between where the voltage is applied and the part of the CPU that's using it. So especially when it gets hotter and gets more resistance ( v i r formulas) then the voltage will drop. The answer is usually to send more voltage to begin with but if you're stable there's no need

Ohk, that's a middle of the road overclock then, not a terrible voltage and decentish clocks for these CPUs

like even if i set the voltage lets say in bios for 1.2v it says on hwmonitor its 1.181 so that's normal?. and one more question iv been running aida64 extreme for about 25 minutes no crashes and max temp is 77c-81c and then it drops to 66c. how long should i keep testing?

Usually if it's stable for like 10 min you should be fine. Most people will test for like 5 minutes while they're just dialing in the overclock, then once they find clocks and voltages they're happy with they'll leave it for a couple hours just to be sure.

If you want to be thorough you also want to test with other workloads/stress tests (like games or programs you use). Beware of Prime95 though, it's known for damaging CPUs and is a completely unrealistic load.

4.5Ghz was my limit to, I could be mostly stable at 4.6Ghz but I had to be over 1.345v and I didn't wanna run that high on the voltage and it was 10c hotter at that level so I backed it back down to 4.5Ghz and started rolling back the voltage till I couldn't go lower.

i curious now about the voltage that's not the same? like i have on 1.310 and it says the cpu core/cache voltage is 1.296 like howee

I've built a few PC's over the years. ONLY ONE displayed the absolute correct voltage all the time... all others would be off just a hair (.005-.02). Typically, if you keep it on static voltage, then you should always be near the lvl you set it. If you set it at 1.310 and you get a constant 1.296 then I wouldn't worry about it. If you started getting spikes higher than .03 difference then there is probably something going on.

Hope this helps.

robinson like even in bios it says my core voltage is 1.296 is there something wrong? or not? like the override voltage it clearly says 1.310 but u can see the voltage is not 1.310 it's 1.296.

Yes you're fine. Look at mine... it's similar.

I did just notice in your screen shot that you have another voltage value set at 1.353 but it's displaying 1.424. I can't see which voltage setting it is because the name is cutoff in the picture... but I would consider that voltage discrepancy as a red-flag.

Provide me a link to the RAM you have and I'll look at the specs.

What is the DRAM voltage when it's set to auto? Do you have XMP turned on?
