My internet is pretty shit and we have 6 users on it so I was wondering if it would be possible to buy a modem to have my own private branch of my existing internet connection

You already have a modem, a new one won't make it any faster unless you modem limited(very unlikely, you isp will tell you normally). Your probably thinking router, and those can set priority of traffic on the network. 

 

You can also get a second connection to your house, but that will cost extra as you need to pay for another line from your isp.

So is there anyway to get a better connection with out spending more money

For ISP's that allow this, you will be paying double. So your better off upgrading your connection speed if your able to.
