Advice for an upgrade

My current desktop (custom created) is coming up on 5 years old. I'm looking to replace the motherboard, CPU and GPU this summer but I'm not really sure what to look for. My target is for a significant gaming upgrade but more "bang for my buck" rather than "cutting edge".

Budget: at most $1500 CAD. Will try to source parts from a local store (memoryexpress.com) but I will also use newegg.ca and tigerdirect.ca.

Current Build:

ASUS Z87 Gryphon

i7-4770 3.4GHZ

ASUS GTX 780 3GB

Corsair Vengeance LP (2x4GB) DDR3 1600MHz

2x 1TB Seagate Barracuda

Corsair Enthusiast TX650M

Corsair Obsidian Series 350D Micro ATX

Love seeing other Asus 780 users in 2018.

Honestly, you could sell off your CPU, motherboard, and RAM and make the jump to Ryzen 5 and keep using your GPU. With some overclocking, my 780 has held up pretty well so far, performing roughly the same as my friend's GTX 1060 3Gb. Easily gets 60fps at 1080p Medium in every game I play, except PUBG which has to go to 720p Lowest to get a playable framerate.

your CPU is perfectly fine for gaming, just get a new more powerful grapics card and more RAM to make it 16GB.

If you want a good stopgap upgrade, then add an SSD and 8gb more ram. If you want a full new PC:

To me the best move would be to keep your current set up upgrade that graphics card and possibly upgrade to 16gb of ram but if you want to play it cheap 8 is still plenty for gaming.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I think I'm going to go for a SSD and RAM first then grab a new graphics card later on.

This might be a dumb question but should I go for the RAM Daniel Z suggested for upgrade reasons or stick with DDR3 and just double up what I have?
