MKV good sound and subs but NO IMAGE

I’ve got a MKV video file. When I play it via stock windows 10 movie app it plays with sound but no image, but when played on VLC or MPC-HC player everything is normal. I would really like to play it properly because I would also like to play I with my “dumb” TV that doesn’t have access to downloadable apps, and it’s annoying to switch program every time a wonna play it.

I tried to convert (MKV Tool Nix; Freemake Video Converter) it on other formats but it doesn’t work.

Anybody knows what is the problem?

Could you please tell me if I could convert it in some way to make it usable?

What codecs does your TV support? Remember, MKV is just a container, so that doesn't help.

I've seen Windows Movie do this when the file was encoded with a codec that the system doesn't support in hardware, like H.265 for instance. In these cases, you will get a blank screen with sound in the background. As VLC and MPC support software decode, they will produce an image.

Which brings forth the important question. .MKV is just the file container which contains the video stream, audio tracks, subs, etc and doesn't mean much as far as decoding goes. Do you know the codec the video stream is encoded in?

Thanks for an inspiration, I've got the solution.

You need to open VLC>File>Convert (Crrl+R)>Add (Choose a file)>Convert/Save>In Profile sction choose your format>Start.

Unfortunately it will last this long ho long the movie is.
