Which GPU Works better for 1440P?

Hello all, my system now has been dead on my for just over a month now because GPU died on me, so I'm trying to find a decent GPU now just so I can get back up and running and then every paycheck I take out a certain amount to go towards the parts I'm trying to build since I originally planned to build a brand new system since last year since current rig is rather outdated.  Right now from since last November GPU market has been sh** as we all know an I originally planned to get 1080ti but every where I look charging an arm and a liver price wise now, even on my retailers and since there is a good chance gpu prices will be like this for a while, I want to get a gpu that works pretty good on 2560x1440p or more so 3440x1440p.  I don't need all the graphics MAXED out per se, but want to get a gpu that at least I won't have to upgrade ANYTIME soon.  Which of these operate better on 1440p

http://galaxstore.net/GALAX-GeForce-GTX-1070-Ti-HOF-8GB_p_157.html - GALAX HOF 1070ti (Since 1080s are jacked up as much as 1080ti's)

or

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0788BTQKQ/?coliid=ITCS4OI5MBRHY&colid=2J0I6BGHE38FL&psc=0&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it - ASUS ROG STRIX RX Vega 56

The build I am trying to do in a month or two is either Zen+ 2600X or  Threadripper 1920X 1st gen / 2nd gen 2920X.  Mainly this new rig will be used for something along lines of a home server that I will do, VM creation, video editing, content creation and gaming as well, any suggestions or thoughts would greatly be appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

Well, the 1070 has always been the 1440p card. I'd go with the 1070 ti in this case just based on pricing and long term. It's the almost-a-1080 card. Vega 56 is there but too much pricier. The gap is supposed to be around $50, not $150.

I see your angle but only real reasons I was considering ASUS ROG Vega 56 that it got really good reviews and was going toe to to with 1070ti and 1070s in 1440p, despite is price gouge @ $850 as well as this awesome freesync monitor but $200 more than 1070ti IS pretty steep, but g-syncs just so expensive so i was like "might as well spend extra $$"

Buy the gtx 1070 or 1070ti, the vega is overpriced and is not 5k gaming ready as advertised. Even linus says that the gtx 1070 is a good gpu for 1440p 60fps gaming.

Do not buy a GPU right now, your best bet is getting a used GPU like a 970 or 290/390.

Or buy a GT 1030 and just run games at 720p which will scale fine to your display.

Yes that's right, go for used nvidia GTX 970 / 980 / 780Ti OR AMD 290/390. If you want a newer card then go for GTX 1070 OR 1070Ti.

Prices are really high now. I would suggest to wait for few months.

My whole system is down because gpu died, but I am rly tempted to buy the HOF 1070ti since Vega 56 is in 1080ti price territory, which rly sucks bcuz i found a really good UW 35" freesync monitor 100hz for $780 that I posted earlier

Isn't the 1070ti horribly overpriced as well?

  • 2 weeks later...

Did some research and since the most recent AMD adrenaline  drivers have been released, the Vega GPUs have been doing pretty good.  Right now I can get a Sapphire Nitro+ Vega 56 for $569.99 before shipping and for the Sapphire Nitro+ Vega 64 I can get that for $649.99 before shipping. The FreeSync monitor I am looking at is a 3440x1440 100Hz refresh rate ultra wide, which one of those GPUs should I pull trigger on at that res and refresh rate?  Should I still bother with a 1070ti?

Most cards are capable of 1440p if you're willing to turn down some settings, you can 4k even with a gtx 670 this way

AMD Ryzen 5 5600 | MSI B450 Tomahawk | Corsair LPX 16GB 3000MHz CL16 | XFX RX 6700 XT QICK 319 | Corsair TX 550M 80+ Gold PSU

1070Ti

The 1100 series probably will be announced in July.  Production is said to be at 20% higher costs due to the use of DDR6.

I still stand in the camp of buying the best card you can get your hands on now.  If the 1100 series blows you away and you have FOMO, just sell your Pascal card which still will have decent value since the 1100 series without a doubt will be taken by miners right away.

Personally I have a 1080 Ti and the card is more than enough, but if I can snag a 1180 on release and either sell it for profit or upgrade at minimal costs by selling my 1080 Ti and keeping a 1180 I will.  Point being getting a card now gives you options, that is if you can find a card at a decent price.

That's wrong, 1070 ti can do 1440p ultra sure, but you can do 1440p with a lot of older cards if you turn down settings.

my 1070 is already struggling at 1440p. i think a 1070Ti or better will work out

forget the 1070, even my 1080 is struggling at 1440p. Sometimes, i have to reduce settings to hit 60 fps. Thanks to G-Sync not a real dealbreaker tho..^^

If we're talking about 60 fps at Ultra as a Target, the 1080 ti might be a 1440p card. But anything below that, too slow.

Yes, it can do 1440p. But most certainly NOT in 60 fps lock. 30 fps? sure, that will probably work ;)

Even my GTX 1080 needs at least 30-40%+ more performance, to hit a clean 60 fps lock in ALL games under 1440p ultra.

Seen a screenshot with a Titan X Pascal Overclocked, and GTA 5 Ultra in 22 fps. And that was even 1920x1080.

That's the problem, you run them on Ultra, if you lower some settings (which shouldn't matter because we're reaching the point of diminishing returns) you can run 4k even on a GTX 670, so this way if you lower settings you can 1440p on pretty much any card that supports it.

Edit: I just realised I said it can run Ultra myself, which is my bad, but still, lowering settings will allow you to do 1440p on a lot more cards than just the 1070

Yeah pretty much what @Morgan Everett said

Lowering settings in modern games barely does anything, you'd be hard pressed to find a difference between medium and high in crysis 3 for instance, and old games that do look like shit on lower settings are old enough to be ran at high anyway. Even if there would be an increase of like 5% in graphical fidelity, that sure as hell doesn't justify the 25% loss in performance. I found medium settings (in modern games at least) to be the sweet spot between performance and graphical sacrifice. Sure, if there's plenty of headroom, like 600fps on medium go for high nothing is stopping you, but to outright dismiss medium settings is pretty dumb.

Edit: in fact, I found Battlefield 1 (the new one) to look better on medium than it does on ultra, or even high, because of all the useless post-processing those settings add.

kliksphilip ran GTA 5 on low in 4k at 30fps on a GTX 670, so 1440p 60fps should be easily achieveable with a 700 or 900 series card, and not even a flagship one.
