FIxing GPUs and ASICs?

How logical or possible is it to fix SMDs on GPUs, laptops, and ASIC miners at home? Say someone lists a GPU on eBay as not working doesn't power on. Assuming the GPU itself isn't dead or water damage how hard is it to fix? Are failures usually easily spotted like a blown capacitor or burn marks? Thanks

Just keeping this here as a its 50/50 short damage or heat damage

heat is easy to fix but the GPU may never be stable again, nor does the fix work all the time (baking it in the oven for reflowing)

short damage is extremely hard to find if its something small, fixing it can be easy or super difficult depending on what component failed, and if its something like the gpu die then its just not worth trying to fix it

 

dont buy broken GPU's basically

How easy or hard it is to spot something on the card depends on how the card failed. And some components don't simply blow out. I've killed a few components without it catastrophically failing.

if the failure is easy to spot, and you have the necessary schematics and parts to fix it.. its very easy.

 

the issue is spotting the failure (which is a skill), parts to fix it (which is hard), and schematics (good luck on the vague sides of the internet).

A modern video card is highly integrated, basically it's just the GPU chip, memory chips and switching voltage regulators for the power. The GPU and memory are ball grid array, so hard to rework without expensive special equipment, if you can even source the chips you need.

 

The switching voltage regulator, were it to fail, would in most cases blow all the chips on the card, making it a write-off.

 

I think finding a videocard with only 1 easily replaceable, discrete component defective would be very rare.

Let me be just very clear about this:

Regarding GPUs in particular, the most common failure mode is going to be die failure of one or more of the ICs. For some reason, I can't seem to find any of the chips available for sale as ICs. This actually quite bothers me, it makes it impossible for makers to integrate their chips into their own circuits. You can sometimes by some old ones on ebay, who knows if those work or not.
