Dear Linus Tech Tips Forum users,

I have been looking at some Cameras and thinking that I want to buy one sometime later this year.

I'm looking for some help choosing which ones to pick. I am hoping that you can at least drop one link into this thread.

Some of the requirements are:

  • Less that $750 CDN
  • Some sort of connection to the internet or Bluetooth so it's easier for me to upload
  • Possibly 20 Mega-Pixels plus

The reason why I came here is that I don't know much about cameras so if anyone could help, thanks.

Some links I recommend: https://www.henrys.com/ and https://www.amazon.ca/.

Thanks for reading,

SwitcherooniMan

Do you plan to make money with said camera?

Are you sure you can't just live with a decent smartphone camera? Such as a OP5/T?

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

Have you looked into the used market, used camera gear is normally fine and you can find some good stuff for a good deal

Ex frequent user here, still check in here occasionally. I stopped being a weeb in 2018 lol

Welcome to the forum!

What kind of camera are you thinking of getting? DSLR? Mirrorless? Micro 4/3s?

Was there an aim to it? Were you just hoping to take photography on as a hobby?

I agree with @Eduard the weeb I'd look pretty strongly at the used market. You can find absolutely killer deals. B&H Photo for example has many used parts listed on their site along side the new.

Ehhh you don't have to be making money for it to make sense to own a camera.

The best camera is the one that you will use. Go test drive some at a camera store or Best Buy. The one that feels best is the one you will use most.

All the modern cameras and ones from a far back as 5 years, will do more than you can handle. Feel/grip and ease of use are paramount

NOTE: I no longer frequent this site. If you really need help, PM/DM me and my e.mail will alert me.

Hey thanks, @dizmo, I was thinking of getting a dslr, and just to learn how to use a camera.

And for @Streetguru, I have a pretty nice camera on my current phone, a Sony Xperia X Performance but I’ve been looking for something that could replace that when I get a new one.

Thanks for all the replies in the last 30mins, I wasn’t sure, so I’m glad I came here.

Do you know which camp you want to sit yourself in? Canon or Nikon?

It's best to figure that out now, as once you start buying glass you're more or less stuck.

Don't get caught up on the body. Just buy a decent kit, a 50mm prime lens, and start with those.

Well its not really used, Canon recently released the SL2 which should help you learn and get into photography and maybe light video work. you could use the kit lens and maybe have spare change for a 50mm prime lens ( lens that doesn't have zoom, but better BOKEH and is faster which means more F stops )

See @dizmo that’s where I am having the problem.

All the rest of my family (from what I know) all use canon. That means for me that it will be easier to get hand-me-down lenses.

I don’t know. By tommorow morning I’ll have posted all of the links/cameras I think I’ll be looking at more and yes @Radium_Angel, I’ll find a time on the upcoming months to look at some, and then post back here when I can.

If that's the case definitely go Canon. Honestly there isn't a massive difference between the two companies, they both make great products.

Since you're learning, either one will do you just as well.

See if you can get an old kit lens from one of your family members or something like a standard zoom. Then you should be able to fir an 800d (t7i in the imperial system I think). That is a great camera, more than most beginners and even some intermediate users (hell even some "pros" I've met in my day) will ever need or can handle.

If not, maybe look at the used or refurbished market for on bundled with a kit lens, even though ebay is full of them, hence the cheap used prices, so the kit lens shouldn't cost you more than $60-70.
