What about i5 8400?

You would need a new motherboard to upgrade to coffee lake, it's why you probably want to go Ryzen 2, it'll be $200 for an R5 2600 6 core 12 thread CPU and $99 for an alright AM4 motherboard. Or the ASrock Pro 4 is usually $75 and will be alright. but will need a BIOS update.

Hello LTT Community,

Let me begin by posting my current setup here: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/TerrellB/saved/T3FRBm

I am looking for upgrades to my pc as I am not sure where to start. I would like to hear some ideas but I will say I mostly want a new CPU and motherboard and am having trouble finding a replacement for me my Intel G4560 CPU. I mostly game on my PC as well as use it for college. A new GPU is out of the question as the current prices are ridiculous. Again any ideas or suggestions are helpful.

Getting a decent i3 or i5 shouldn't be that hard if you sell your Pentium.

Want to know which mobo to get?

Spoiler

Choose whatever you need. Any more, you're wasting your money. Any less, and you don't get the features you need.

Only you know what you need to do with your computer, so nobody's really qualified to answer this question except for you.

There's nothing that's worth upgrading to, save your money for a Ryzen 2 system most likely.

An i3 would have the same performance, and it's a waste to buy a 4c/4t i5 at this point since those CPUs are now worth about $100 yet they're likely still around $200.

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

If I switch from Intel to AMD will I have to reinstall Windows as well as all of my programs?

Naturally, but you probably want to reinstall window with any major hardware swap.
