Hello there, I'm looking to upgrade my network setup with a new modem/router. Main point is that it has to be VPN capable and Gigabit.

I had a super bad experience with Netgear D7000v2 since their firmware is super buggy and every release fixes a problem while creating a new one.

Last beta they've sent me completely shut off every wifi connection to fix the VPN. Also, OpenVPN client is removing MD5 support and Netgear is not going to upgrade to another type of encryption for VPN.

Features that I need:

VPN

Dynamic DNS (for the vpn)

Gigabit Ethernet

A good thing netgear has is the dynamic dns service included when buying the device, does anyone else have this?

Looking forward for you recommendations, have a nice day everyone!

Get a pfsense machine

https://www.aliexpress.com/category/70803003/mini-pc.html

build your own router instead asking company to do it for you.

Yes any router with custom firmware such as DDWRT or Tomato can do it, but at what price and what kind performance?

if you going to spend more than $100 just for a router, get a pfsense instead, it makes more sense.

I really don't understand why people keep buying expensive router that do the same thing as old wrt54gl does (though slightly better)

We already have the technology (a better one) and its free.

A) They want a new WiFi standard. G is dead. PFsense does not do WiFI well.

B) They want easy use. PFsense is not that easy from my understanding. Neither is DDWRT.

C) Knowledge. Most people are not really knowledgeable about networking. So they choose the easiest solution.

D) Not every one has older hardware or wants the larger electricity usage.

E) Not every one wants to build a router, buy a switch (Which PFsense doesn't do well), then buy a wireless access point.

F) Not every one needs the power of a PFsense box. Ive read PFsense can do more than a Cisco equipment. Which is cool, but not every one wants that kind of power, even if its cheap. They want a box they can set and forget about for years.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

Isn't getting a mini PC a bad idea? I could be wrong, but I thought you needed at least two Ethernet ports to have a router (One for LAN, One for WAN).

Getting a mini PC with only one Ethernet port kind of screws you over (can't expand it in the future either).

Also to add to @Donut417 's list. Some people want warranties / tech support contracts.

Again, this requirement isn't easy to use either, even on easy to use router
Either way, people need to learn something for setting up VPN  their router (if that option is available)

I'm not talking about simplicity about router that people usually connect and forget about it.

This is for specific use, and that specific usage is not something that you connect and forget about it either, you are going to deal frequently, like changing the key, or simple changing the server address.

There's nothing simple way about setting up a vpn, if there's any point me one.

This for example

That excluding setting up a custom firmware in first place.

Also you are mixing Router and Access point.

Wifi in general doesn't have to be built in with router or vice versa, if you have solid router, adding wireless is cheaper and easier.

If you have easy solution (that works) for OP problem post it.

I don't see any solution that would works without

a. Learn pfsense

b Learn Tomato

c. Learn DDWRT

d. Buy another expensive router that could meet his expectation

  • 3 weeks later...

Sorry for the very late reply and thanks to everyone that replied.

I can't bother in setting up my own router so I need a recommendation on a ready to go router that meets my requirements.

I can work with DDWRT but I'm not sure what's the best modem/router to put that in and I'm not sure about its stability.

Thanks again!

Edit: I've narrowed my selection down to this, does anyone have any experience with any of these?

Linksys EA9500

Asus RT-AC86U

Synology RT-2600AC

Asus RT-AC5300 (I think it's older than the AC86U and less wireless coverage)

Asus RT-AC88U (Really like the link aggregation but not a key feature and it's old)

Other suggestions similar to these?
