I game on my 60" 4k TV too. Windows scaling @300% looks like legit dogshit but that doesn't matter in games.

Thing is, most TVs have pretty bad input lag and response times, which makes gaming unplayable. I particularly searched for a good one when I bought mine.

And because I play racing games and sit at like 1m distance, 4k is pretty damn amazing.

Not bad at all, if you enjoy it then keep going. I've been trying my 49" 4k TV as a monitor again for a while. Scaling isn't necessary at such sizes, so it's just set to 100%. Screen real estate (e.g. when playing EVE, Anno and the likes) is amazing and it looks cool for many other games (Witcher 3 :D ).

4k gaming can be considered "bad", because in general you'll have to turn down some graphics settings in the recent AAA games to get decent framerates, which defeats the point of playing it in 4k in the first place.

Monitor wise I'm returning to my trusty old 24" 144Hz though. 50" is just too big and the 60 Hz is... well not 120+ Hz :P

If you want anywhere near acceptable response times you've got to game in 1080p@120hz. I've got an LG OLED 4K TV myself and I can comfortably browse the web and game any non-FPS game using said mode.

Sadly you can't do 1080p@120hz with HDR enabled though as there's not enough bandwidth, and make sure you have a proper HDMI cable to support said mode.

It's going to depend on the TV really.  Some TVs have painfully high input lags but even my cheaper 65" 4K from Samsung, with RGB 4K, and gamemode enabled, the response time is only 20ms, and that's competative or better than most non-gaming PC monitors.
