Suitable GPU for old rig

WR10

Hi all, I've been running a fairly old low end rig for awhile now, and I've missed many good games in recent years due to a weak GPU, and right now im thinking of getting a used GPU as my budget is rather limited.

The specs of my pc are:

Xeon E1230v2

8GB 1333mhz ram

MSI B75 itx motherboard

FSP 500W PSU

GTX650Ti Boost

Bitfenix Prodigy ITX case

I haven't been following the pc scene for the past few years after building my rig but holy sh*t everything is expensive?? Anyway, budget would be around $250-$300. Currently looking at the used market and found a few choices:

1)Used GTX1060 3GB

2)Used GTX970 4GB

3)Used RX570 4GB

The GTX970 and 1060 3GB are pretty close, performance wise. The 970 consumes more power, though. The 570 is a bad buy at that price point, so disregard it.

PC Specs - AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D MSI B550M Mortar - 32GB Corsair Vengeance RGB DDR4-3600 @ CL16 - ASRock RX7800XT 660p 1TBGB & Crucial P5 1TB Fractal Define Mini C CM V750v2 - Windows 11 Pro

given that GTX 1060 3GB are still at their crazy GPU mining prices

your best bet is the GTX 970 but be wary of fake GTX 960 and 970s

I prefer the 570. All 3 cards have similar performance, but the RX 570 is the only one with Freesync support (Freesync monitor in the future?) and 4GB VRAM.

It's priced similarly to the other 2 cards, so price is not a point of argument.

I see, how about 6GB 1060 if I can find a used one for a good price? Is it worth the extra $? At this point if its down to 970 v 1060 3gb i'll probably opt for the 1060 since my PSU i only 500W

currently the RX 570 is also used for mining so prices are inflated

to get just one GPU i need to pay at least 450 bucks for it

same goes for the GTX 1060 3GB

Even if the cards are priced similarly? And thanks for letting me know about the fake gtx 960 and 970s, didn't know anything about them prior to this post

Yeah they're all priced similarly.. so it's not a bad buy then?

Get the 3GB 1060. As long as you will get it for a decent price.

Yeah they're all priced similarly.. so it's not a bad buy then?

yea those extremely cheap GTX 960 and 970s you see on ebay from china are actually modded BIOS of GTS 450 1GB

the modded BIOS makes them look like legit GTX 960 and 970 but the clear give away is the number of CUDA cores and the VRAM of 1GB

some games will locked up once the VRAM hit over 1GB and certain games will not run because the GTS dont have support for newer APIs

OP already said they are at the same prices. When will you start reading things in detail?

Yes

Exactly. If a 960 or 970 is priced below $100 and in perfect condition (as so they claim to), it's a trap.

I would get the rx 570. It has support for freesync, and freesync monitors are much cheaper than gsync ones. Also the performance is similiar, and it has the most vram out of the bunch( 4gigs vs 3,5 and 3) Just make sure that the used card is not a fake or broken.

The GTX 970 3.5GB would still be the better buy over the GTX 1060 3GB due to the extra 0.5GB and the heck a lot more CUDA cores

the 970 has 1664 vs the 1060 3GB 1152

The GTX 970 OC to 1.5GHz can still be a beast in 1080P gaming

You need some sleep, when you start comparing CUDA core count across different generations.
