So at the moment my setup consists of full desktop PC and a Laptop docking station connected to a single panel. The PC is my personal machine and the laptop i use for work. I use a nice mouse and mech keyboard for my PC but a crappy wireless keyboard and mouse for the laptop. Is there such a thing as a usb splitter that I could plug the good mouse and keyboard into and share between the PC and laptop? Something maybe with a switch that you can flick over to control either machine? It would need to have multiple imputs for mouse, keyboard, maybe other USB stuff.

Any suggestions would be great.

@TurbulentWinds beat me to it :P It sounds exactly like what you're looking for, and you don't have to have hardware laying around.

Synergy a no-go as I dont have install rights on my work laptop

USB hub seems to be the way to go, I used to use one to swap my keyboard and mouse between my laptop and desktop until I started using my desktop as my primary machine.

Why not an USB KVM switch?  You don't have to use the monitor sharing of the KVM if not needed.

I also happen to have the exact scenario as you.  I have a work laptop and my primary desktop.

My laptop is connected to my monitor via mini-dp and my primary desktop is connected via display port.

My mechanical keyboard has a pluggable USB connection so I have two usb cables, one connected to my laptop and one connected to desktop.

I have two separate mouse.  When I am working on my laptop, I use my wireless vertical mouse.  When I am on my primary desktop, I use my wired gaming mouse.

Switching between the two computers involve selecting the right input on the monitor and switching out the USB cable on my keyboard.
