Crossfire hasn't been worth it with APUs even going back to the older A-series chips. Every time I asked about it, I was recommended to just get a decent dGPU as very few games can take advantage of Crossfire(and this was back in 2016).

Think this was more of a thing with DX12 been able to utilise the power of an APU/iGPU to aid with discrete processing. I don't think its ever been implemented though (not at this level)

It was pretty worth it as an upgrade back in 2014/2015...

crossfire, dual graphics, ect many names...

This was always something determined driver/software level by AMD at least, wasn't typically something programmed in...

IE I did crossfire with my A10-6800k, A10-7850k, and A10-7890k with both "approved" and even those not listed, of course, returns on investment (increased price/performance) where ABSOLUTE SHIT! and I only did it because I got one or more parts for free and hey, an improvement is an improvement!!!

That being said, I am wondering if the new Ryzen APU's can MultiGPU for DX12 titles, in which case, THATS SEXY AND I WANT (even though I have a 1600x)

in the past if I remember correctly you could technically crossfire an apu with a graphics card. Is that still the case for ryzen? If so, how bad is it? has anyone tried?

The Ryzen APUs aren't out yet. Even so, this "technology" has been around for 10 years since the Phenom CPUs and 700 series chipsets and it's never been worth using, even if you happened to get the right parts. Until AMD stops including only weak AF graphics on it's APUs, it'll never be worth it.

Not really.  It was a significantly worse setup than normal CF/SLI in terms of compatibility.

Yeah, but as an upgrade to an APU you had, if you could get one of the compatible 7000 series cards used for $60-70, it was great for the money.

What would make someone think I would have even argued it, let alone called a single source fake? It was a passing remark not relevant to the main point of my post.

I've been using my dual graphics setup for 2 years now and it worked great.

My spec:

AMD A10-7860k @ 4.3GHz OC

iGPU R7 @ 1GHz OC

AMD HD7750 @ 1GHz OC

Samsung Green Ram 8GB @ 2400MHz OC

I can play Tomb Raider at a constant 30fps at 1080p with all settings maxed(except AA).

Seriously HD7750 was never meant to be paired with A10-7860K.

AMD only specified R7-250 as compatible dual graphic pair but that vcard only has 384 stream processors compared to the 512 on the iGPU.

So on a hunch a bought the HD7750 (because it has 512 stream processors thus should be a better pair to the iGPU).

I thought I saw a random chinese/taiwanese website that post a chart with A10-7860k/HD7750 pair.

After I installed the card and the drivers(Catalyst) Surprise surprise the card paired just fine. I was getting double the performance of just the iGPU.

At first I was afraid to update to the latest Crimson driver because it may not be compatible(dual graphics) anymore after the update.

But I did the update and lo and behold. I am able to dual graphic the A10-7860k + HD7750 just fine on Crimson.

AMD never advertised of this beautiful pair and going dual graphics on a hunch really paid off.

When the 2400G ryzen apu is available I am going to buy it and try to pair it with either RX-550/RX-560/RX-560D.. Sadly AMD don't do GPU's with 704 stream processors but let's see what luck I will encounter ahead

  • 7 months later...

I have my build paired with an RX 550 4gb and get decent frame rates. As far as price / performance , I got the GPU for $60 used in perfect condition and the APU for $45. I think it was worth it considering the overpriced intel chips and Nvidia cards on the current market. Hell, i build the whole machine from selling junk i wasnt using on ebay so i basically got it free :D
