I have build a 1950x machine and was wondering if 54.8c is a good temps on the bios after the first boot up ? I was also getting a weird electrical noise coming from my power supply tho it gone for now. I used the power supply in my Intel build so it didn't make that noise before.

Forgot to mention I am using the noctura u14s tr4 and put a big blob of thermal paste on the middle of the cpu.

55c idle seems kinda high, and probably because of how you applied the paste.. a big blob in the middle isnt really recommended on Threadripper..

Yeah you're probably going to want to use the line method or manually spread it to cover the entirety of the block. Any bubbles will work their way out when you screw the heatsink down and turn it on.

So use a knife and spread a thin layer over the whole of the cpu?

I usually get a sandwich baggie wrap it on my finger and spread it with my finger that way or sacrifice an old plastic gift card, or other plastic card. Personally the baggie method works better when getting to the edges.

What are you using to read temps? Not everything adjusts for the 27C offset depending on the BIOS version/age. Also, what board?

Then I wonder if the BIOS is showing you the temperature offset. At 54C touching the heat pipes by the cooler base should be uncomfortable. If they feel cool then I doubt the CPU cores are really at 54C. Especially considering the dies are soldered to the IHS.

Something worth mentioning though is that I have had the experience where while in the BIOS the CPU will run full voltage & full clock speed resulting in high idle temps but once you got into the OS the CPU underclocks and undervolts itself until a load is detected then displaying much lower temps. Maybe the same is for threadripper.

Can too much thermal paste cause the high temp ?

No because the excess would just get squeezed out the sides but if the compound is electrically conductive it could then be a threat to components beside the socket or even get under the socket and short pins.

Anything in the bios look off to you ? Also I am getting I weird electrical sounding noise what I think coming from the power supply.

That high CPU idle temperature but this could be normal depending on the circumstances. While it says 54C did you try touching the heatsink as close to the base as possible? If it feels HOT then it's really 54C if it feels "meh" then the BIOS is showing you a huge offset temp to prevent you from cooking it via overclocking. Regardless it should go down once you reach the OS. Fire up realtemp and see what that says.

Oh, and PSU coil whine (like GPU coil whine) is a thing. My Corsair AX1200i has annoying random frequency coil while and it does it even when the system is "off" (standby power is still flowing). It isn't harmful to the PSU it's just displeasing to the ears.

doesnt matter what temps are at idle or in the bios. it matters if it overheats under full load.
