Hi, is my first time building a gaming pc. So the cpu i choose is i5-8400 which cant overclock. I was wondering do i need a cpu cooler for it?

Yes you do. The computer will not turn on without a CPU cooler installed and if you somehow do manage to get it to turn on, it won't last long before either overheating or frying itself.

It comes with one. You can get a better aftermarket one if you want lower temperatures.

For one thing, it won't turn on without a cooler.

It'll run, but it'll run really slow:

that has 4 less cores tho, but Intel chips can throttle impressive amounts

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

I had a Core 2 Quad rig with a Corsair H100i, but the bracket it came with wasn't made for LGA 775, so I used stiff wire to hold it in place. Turns out the water block wasn't even touching the CPU and the thermal paste was bridging the gap, so the PC was nice and slow booting into Windows. It's still alive though.

If you are going to pick something like that, you might as well use the stock cooler. What is your budget if you want to buy an aftermarket cooler?

Don't waste your money on cheap coolers. Stock is about same stuff with one linked. If you really need something quieter, look at 92mm towers at minimum. TX3, M9i and so on. Stock cooler is worth about $10 (based on price difference between boxed and tray packed CPUs).

Yes, although it's probably not the best option available.

Where are you shopping/located? Budget?

What ram and case do you have?

The H410/H411, or TX3 Evo from CoolerMaster should be plenty for cooling.

It seems like you're ordering from a system builder. Any reason you're not building the system yourself instead?
