Best Linux distribution for general use

I'm very interested in linux but I dont know much about linux.I'm planning on dual booting windows and linux.I have used Ubuntu before and it is very user friendly for me.Is there an better and more user friendly linux distribution out there?.I'm mainly interested in low storage space utilization and security.My main use will be web surfing and playing videos but intereseted experimenting with linux..Which version will you recommend?.Thank you.

do you want something that looks and feels like Windows? then go for Linux Mint.

Mint is a good one. I prefer Lubuntu, but that's more because I tend to run Linux on older or lower-spec machines, and Windows on beefier ones. I also have a lot of fun with Puppy Linux, but Puppy is for stuff like old netbooks with an Atom and 1GB of RAM.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

Ubuntu is great for something similar to windows

I'd try Mint with the MATE desktop. It's fairly lightweight and runs well on older hardware.

Kubuntu and Xubuntu will both give you a similar experience to windows, but if your interested in learning more about linux I can't help but recommend installing i3 and giving it a go. It's not really that hard to learn it if you have time to read the documentation and is imho better than anything gnome/kde plasma can offer. It's also a lot less resource intensive and you can select any distribution you like! If your interested in trying it out just pm me.

I'm going to make a lot of people mad at me but I'm a 10 year linux user so fuck it:  DO NOT USE MINT.  In general it has a lot of problems if you're trying to get a lot of performance out of your machine.  Its odd now that I think about it because its almost on the same LTS schedule as android with its kernel on 4.4 and 8 being on 4.2 or something.

 

Depending on what you want to do I would look at 3 distros in total:  Ubuntu - Fedora - Antergos.  Ubuntu is Debian based, Fedora is Red Hat based, and Antergos is Arch based.  These are the 3 main desktop competitors with new users (not saying others aren't out there, these are just the main 3 atm) and each have their advantages and disadvantages.

 

If you're just looking for a new OS to play with for a while then just go with Ubuntu and do your thing.  I'm on Ubuntu right now seeing what features are going to be in 18.04 when it drops.  If you wanna get into programming or heavy computery stuff like that Fedora is a good place to start.  Then Arch is...  well arch.  You learn how linux goes together and how it works with your computer.  Though its a little harder because you HAVE TO KEEP ANTERGOS/ARCH UP TO DATE.

Linux Mint used to be great. Sad to say, not anymore. I mainly used Mint as it shipped with Wine built in to run windows programs. But it crashes.

 

Go with Ubuntu instead.

I just wiped mint off my drive and tried the deepin OS and omg that thing is far too user friendly, like really user friendly. It is like mint but x100. It is about as user friendly as Linux can get.

 

unfortunatly, that does mean limiting much things like no pacakage management except the built in software center(which is by far far far the best I’ve seen on a Linux system.). However you can still do these things on terminal if you have the know how. 

 

For windows supoort, deepin uses cross over which is actually a proprietary paid software. I honestly have no idea how the development team got that on their distro for free. 

 

Propieratry softwares is everywhere on there, chrome, steam, Skype ect. These Chinese devs are totally not sticking to the Linux open source philosophy....

 

but it I must say I am quite impressed. Everything works out of the box and frustration free. I honestly can’t say that about any new distros I tried for the first time including mint. I remember breaking mint several times and reinstalling several when first trying that distro....

Most of these other Distro's base off Debian, so personally I would just use that. Plus it's been around a lot longer than all of these other Distro's, more time to be polished and it's security is damn near the best in the buisness.

As many people are already saying, Ubuntu is probably the best choice. I recommend 17.10 as the GNOME desktop environment is spectacular. But the 16.04 LTS release with Unity environment will be more stable, and probably feels a bit more like windows if you want that. Aside from Ubuntu, there are Ubuntu flavors (editions with different desktop environment), and there is a distribution of Linux called Fedora which is pretty nice.
