Broadwell is supported on Z97 and H97 for the desktop chips.

It's just that Broadwell was almost entirely non-desktop (or at least, non-desktop focused) and the few desktop SKUs were mostly seen in pre-built systems. It may as well have been skipped on desktop.

or is it the same deal as nvidias 8th gen?

If I remember correctly, I believe that was indeed the case. A quick look online tells me that there were only 2 5th gen CPU sold commercially, the i7-5775C and the i5-5675C.

New to Star Citizen? Look no further!

H97 and Z97 were the only chipsets that supported Broadwell and Haswell-R out of the box. There's only a handful of chips for the desktop that were released retail:

Intel® Core™ i5-5675C

Intel® Core™ i7-5775C

Plus a bunch of Xeon E3 V4 chips

PC Specs - AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D MSI B550M Mortar - 32GB Corsair Vengeance RGB DDR4-3600 @ CL16 - ASRock RX7800XT 660p 1TBGB & Crucial P5 1TB Fractal Define Mini C CM V750v2 - Windows 11 Pro

They fucked up with Sandy Bridge E using the same numbering as Ivy Bridge (38xx/39xx) while the 2800 and 2900 series only existed in laptops. GG. They just numbered forward from there.
