1440p 144hz or 4k 60hz?

MegaLukey

Im gonna be picking up a 1080ti once I can find one thats in stock, and with that I plan on upgrading my monitor. I was hoping to get a 4k 120 hz monitor, but the 1080 ti just cant support that (also confused with HDMI, since you need HDMI 2.1 to run 4k 120, but the 1080ti's have HDMI 2.0b), and I dont plan on running them in SLI. So with that being said, do you guys prefer resolution over refresh rate, or refresh rate over resolution?

I currently have a 1080p 144hz, and im having a hard time coming to terms with losing those glorious frames, but maybe 4k is worth it, your opinion are welcome!

how big will the 4k monitor be? because if the 4k monitor is under 27" dont get it because the pixels will be all cramped up together,

The majority of people value frame/refresh rate over resolution. Display port is able to support higher refresh rates at higher resolution then HDMI is, which is why it tends to be preferred by some people, despite it being harder to find(thanks to it not being as common. As of right now(I mean what's presently on the market, not what we know is coming), 4K monitors don't go higher then 60Hz. If nothing else, I would go 1440p Ultrawide with high refresh rate for a good balance between higher rez, high refresh rate, and something that can still be easily run by the 1080ti

I currently have a 24" 1440p 165Hz panel and I love it. Feels super crisp, and buttery AF.

So I don't think you need to step up to 4K unless you're going over 30" or something, that smoothness is just too nice. HUGE difference form 60hz, I'd never go back now

LAN Rig: R5 3600X @ PBO, RTX 2070, 32 GB DDR4 3200, Dan Case A4-SFV V4, 120mm AIO for the CPU

HTPC: i7-7700K @ 4.6 GHz, GTX 1050 Ti, 16 GB DDR4 3200, AliExpress K39, IS-47K Cooler

Router: R3 2200G @ stock, 4GB DDR4 2400, what are cases, stock cooler

I don't have a problem...

Yeah 144 just feels so much smoother, I dont think 60 hz is gonna be enough for me every again

That was another option I was looking at, a ultra wide curved 1440p 144 hz monitor, but I want to do some research on that, because what if some games dont stretch? Or will they all?

I'm not sure that every game supports it, but you can manually set the resolution in the game's settings. It's possible you may just get black bars on the sides of the screen.

After trying 144Hz, I cannot go back!

Personally, I would get 1440p144 without a doubt.

If you like a sharper, albeit less smooth, image then go for 2160p60.

I suppose I could just play the game in window mode, and treat it like a double monitor display

Personally I use a 32in 1440p 144hz monitor and I couldn't be happier. That being said everyone had their own preferences. Before moving to my current monitor I used a 39in TV because I like having a large screen and a TV was the only option available in my price point. A lot of people are moving to ultra-wide monitors for gaming but I personally find them "squished" vertically. Again these are my opinions and everyone will have their own. I do strongly suggest that you find a way to try out an ultra-wide before you decide to go that route because they are not small investments.

depends for what games you play, ultrawide can be hit or miss depending if the game properly supports it or not...some games just stretch out to fill the screen, and some other games really does give you a wider field of view...it would depend on price and personal preference i guess.

I've only ever been able to see one ultrawide. Persoannally, if you go Ultrawide, you gotta get as big a screen as you possibly can.

Correct, the 1080 Ti does not support 4K 120 Hz over HDMI. It does support it over DisplayPort though.

Really? Well, most people are stupid... Or they're just really into competitive gaming, specifically shooters. I have 1440p 75hz and I would only consider paying more if it was a IPS, sadly it isn't.

You'll never notice the difference between 5ms and 1ms. I've had them side by side, trust me 165hz is pretty obvious compared to 120hz for example, but response time below 8ms is unnoticeable.

Some things look good on paper while making no real world difference.

Yup, DP can support 4k at 120fps. Bundle two together (as high-end cards tend to have 2-3 of them) and they can handle every resolution/refresh rate you throw at them.

That said, if you dont want to compromise between 4k and 144hz, would you consider looking into (and waiting for) this?
