Ok, so Imma go on a rant here - and no, this is not status update material because Imma write a lot and I want a discussion! ...

So I am really excited for the new Raven Ridge Desktop APUs which will probably be released in a few weeks. I was planning for quite some time to replace my shitty pc with an ultra small build that I could mount behind my monitor and thus save some space in my small room and also be able to easily take it to friends for a lan. I was excited to play CS:GO and Warframe and strategy games like AoE2, CoH and all that stuff with this rig. Also It would be really cool because of how cheap simple 1080p gaming would become with these APUs. But there is one thing that is bothering me and just as the title says thats shitty RAM prices.

It's not that I don't have the money or that I need a lot of RAM, it is just that at twice the price that it used to be it's grotesque spending that kind of money on an ultra-budget pc.

Add that to the fact that AM4 mini-itx boards are quite a bit more expensive than intel ones rn this quickly enters the budget of a "real" entry-level gaming pc. And I am just not willing to spend more than absolutely necessary on this budget build. And I know it pisses of a lot of builders here, too. Add that to the crazy gpu prices and every build you are going to attempt is gonna skyrocket in cost. I've read up a little about the issue and no one really seems to know where exactly the "shortage" comes from (might blame mobile devices) but from what I read we can expect the situation to become better by 2019 at the earliest... This is horrible and I will probably stick to my crappy pc because it can do all the games I want, but still it's a shame that with all those new and shiny hardware releases everything seems to be held back by RAM and secondarily gpu prices. So yea bad times for builders I guess, unless you do project builds where you get sponsored or the budget doesn't matter. Basically I am pissed I have to pay such a high premium on stuff that isn't new at all but still essential and that this holds me back from enjoying new hardware.

Ok, I'm done now :P

Yep. Building a PC for gaming sucks right now. Welcome to the club. :P

Fuck ram prices, fuck GPU prices, fuck them all to hell. I'm just going for the cheapest ram I can find at this rate.

I even tried looking on local listings but people are selling their kits for more than they bought them! ...

It's because of these inflated prices that I can no longer actually build a PC. It sucks because I can't find a videocard that isn't a 1050ti or the 6gb 1060... Literally all the 1070s,1080s and 1080tis are sold out in every store I've been to and it sucks. I don't know how long itll take but at this point I'm thinking do I really even need a gaming Pc anymore?

@Nicnac @NMS @SC2Mitch

What I WILL say about getting "better" GPU and Ram prices:

I was recently able to snag 16GB of DDR4 3000Mhz by using a site called Camelcamelcamel.com (amazon price tracker) to look at first party (amazon) and third party sellers, and got a deal on a kit of open box 2x8GB for $100.

I'm also looking at getting a GTX 1080 in the near future and have found that sellers like B&HPhoto have locked their prices at a certain amount above MSRP and are just constantly out of stock. What you can do is call one of their reps and ask them when/if they're getting another shipment of cards in, then call that morning to order one. (in person and phone orders take priority over online orders for B&H)

Decent prices can still be found, you just have to look harder.

Good news if you go Intel and don't mind buying ram on eBay - 2x16 GB Crucial Ballistix sport for £270, or 2x8 Gb for £160 (2666 / 2400 respectively, but my current 2400 stuff does 2666 CL 14 @ 1.35v which is all coffee lake needs for peak performance).

Bad news if you want AMD - You need Samsung B die 3200 MHz CL14, or 3600 MHz CL16 for peak performance, and that costs like £450 for 2x16 Gb.

The crucial ballistix is also 'only' £327 for 2x16 2666 on crucial's website, but its no good for AMD (over clocking Micron ram is hard and usually will only net 3000-3200 MHz at CL16 which is too much performance lost over Samsung b die, and it gives best performance at low latency 2666-2800 MHz instead which is perfect for Intel, basically run it as high as it will go on 14-14-14 timings, but it will cap out well before 2800 MHz).

Linus is my fetish.

All I want is 2933mhz actually as that will be the top speed Raven Ridge will support. Even then 8gigs would be enough for me but you can only get 16gigs at least. I don't know if there even are 4gig modules for 2933 ram... Any ideas would be appreciated :)

I might just go for 2400mhz as that can still be had at halfway decent prices...

Yea I have tons of DDR3 lying around lol...

I only have 6x2 Gb modules of DDR3 that I had listed on best offer on eBay for 60 days and no one bought it.

Even though its elipda hyper 2133 MHz 9-9-9-27 stuff, and I advertised it back when XtremeSystems still had some users in their XtremeBandwidth subforum, no one even offered me anything for a single 2x2 Gb kit.

This ram freaking breaks records and goes as high as you want with as low latencies as you want and your mobo / CPU will allow based on however much voltage you dare to push through it ... And no one wants it.

Welp, I have 6 shiny paperweights. It can do like 2400+ MHz CL8 if you get a lucky IMC to match it with and use 1.8v on the dram ... It probably won't last long but even just £30 to break some benchmarks records and risk frying it? Well, its useless now cos none of the latest stuff uses DDR3.

Linus is my fetish.

What case are you using for the build? I actually plan on picking up one of those intel G chips with the semi-integrated amd Radeon gpus. It’s performance is faster than 1050ti in graphics and it is extreamly small. I am waiting for the desktop variants to retail.

I’m literally using an OEM HP Elite 8200 for this. Small form factor too...

not exactly the best cooling.

Who needs fancy graphics and high resolutions when you can get a 60 FPS frame rate on iGPUs?

I thought about this case: Chieftec Compact IX-03B pretty small and cheap.

Are you talking about the Intel AMD collab chip that was recently announced on that nuc platform? Those look amazing and they are actually running VEGA gpus. Would consider those as well but I think they will be outside my price range. Maybe for my next laptop though...
