Intel Optane

Hi guys

i was just wondering if anyone has tried to use an Intel Optane drive as a small SSD.

you may be wondering why you would want to but if your running a small OS like some linux distros could fit easy on to a 16 or 32gb SSD.

Haven't tried but don't see any reason for it not to work. But do you really need that performance level in that application, might as well get a NAND SSD for less cost per capacity.

It is not a SSD it is a Cache drive, you can not use it as mass storage SSD.

But there no point, its terrible price per Gb

You can't use it like an SSD, because it's not one

Optane cache modules work like any other SSD if you so wish. I know people who have bought a bunch of them to raid 0 it for some insane performance.

i no the price isn't great for the most part but there is a store near me i saw them for as low as $38 and for a small drive to put linux on or my idea of putting pfsense on it to run as my router it would be cheaper then buying a 120gb ssd for $95.

i no that its a cache drive i no alittle bit about them but havnt seen any videos or articles talking bout it as an ssd.

hi guys 

i can confirm that the Intel Optane drives can be installed and used as a boot drive.

i bit the bullet and got one to play with and works well, cant speak to the speed of it as i havnt tested it but feels faster then a hard drive so if anyone wants a small ssd for a boot drive and doesnt care about the cost per gig then give it a try.
