[SSD] Is it worth upgrading from 2.5" SATA to M.2 NVMe?

so of course the upgrade from HDD to SSD is significant especially with boot times cut to 20-50%.

 

but what about for NVMe vs SATA??

 

Is the difference even noticeable in general use?

if youre questioning it that means you probably dont need nvme, and SATA ssd's is more than enough for general use

nvme will only benefit if youre a working with large data files (ex. large autocad files, video files for video editing etc)

For nearly everyone, NVMe isn't worth the extra cost over SATA - the benefit simply isn't applicable to most use cases.

Up to you. I have nearly 30 startup programs (browsers, vet software, etc.) that are I/O limited (aside from Displayfusion which is CPU-limited) and boot times have gone down a few seconds. If you aren't sure, just stick with M.2 SATA disks for cleanliness and ease of installation. Do make sure that you choose capacity over speed.

however I still have a 2.5" HDD installed so I'll only be able to reduce a single SATA cable.

Just want to point out that what you're looking for is M.2 and not exclusively NVMe. NVMe is a communications protocol like SATA while M.2 is the form factor like mSATA, 2.5", and 3.5".

yea I know. but there's not alot of M.2 SATA's here so if I were to upgrade, it'll probably be a cheap M.2 NVMe (e.g. Intel 600P)

(refining my search to only 250-275GB SSDs)

so far the cheapest M.2 SSDs are the ff (which are AFAIK, M.2 SATA), 108-110$

• Intel 540S 240GB
• Crucial MX300 275GB
• Samsung 850 EVO 256GB

the Intel 600P is just a few more bucks more than that at approx. 113$ for a 256GB model.

 

I guess there's just not alot of demand for M.2 here in my country as most people build in bigass ATX cases and don't really need the space-savings

if you want to reduce cable clutter then you can just get a m.2 SSD that uses SATA instead of NVME
