Hey everyone, Im getting set up to build my first gaming rig! I've got all my shiney new parts and i want to start slapping things together but i want to ensure that I won't short out any components, I have a wood bench and hard floors so im not to worried about carpet but i am still slightly paranoid about putting this thing together. I guess more than anything I'm wondering if I'm being paranoid or if I do need to invest in a mat or a strap or something like that. Also, my workbench has a big tv on it. if I don't have to take it off I'd rather not but if that would make things way worse please let me know. Thanks everyone

You're basically already fine, but if you want to be super careful follow these steps:

  1. Plug in PSU to power
  2. turn on PSU (IMPORTANT, otherwise the electricity won't flow to ground)
  3. Every few minutes just go and touch the outside of the PSU. That should ground you just fine.

Want to know which mobo to get?

Choose whatever you need. Any more, you're wasting your money. Any less, and you don't get the features you need.

Only you know what you need to do with your computer, so nobody's really qualified to answer this question except for you.

You should be fine. Perhaps if you were in a very staticy environment where you constantly shocked yourself on everything then I might invest in an anti-static strap. Otherwise I wouldn't worry about it.

I'm not sure this part is true. Most PSUs break the Live wire while Neutral and Ground(Earth) remain connected. The case of the PSU is reference to ground. The Live and Neural wires don't touch the enclosure. If Live did it'd cause a short circuit to ground and you'd pop a breaker. So turning on the PSU shouldn't make a difference.

@bob51zhang You leave the PSU off to prevent anything from powering on. The PSU will be completely grounded just by the cord to the outlet.

Forgot to shit-post!

I keep a .40SW nearby for mischievous dust bunnies that may lurk about while assembling or cleaning.
