Used mining cards worth it?

bleedblue

I've come up on an add in a local buy-and-sell facebook group of a guy selling his 6gb 1060's for ~190 USD each. Seems like a good deal considering GPU prices nowadays, but he says he used them to mine for about a year now which got me worried. I asked him a couple of questions about the cards and he said they were all undervolted to keep temps and power consumption under control and were placed in a well-ventilated area. Are the cards still worth a purchase? They don't have warranties and I really don't know what mining does to GPUs, so for that price is it worth getting one?

Inside some old case I found lying around.

It's a risk. It's like buying a car with 200,000 miles on the clock. It might've been just a motorway cruiser with little wear, but it could've been a city driver at the end of its life. If you're willing to take a gamble to save a few bucks, go for it.

Asking if buying a used mining GPU is worth the price is like asking if a pair of branded used underwear is a good value. It's not the cheapest option around and you really like that limited edition Hilfiger classic, but could you really ever be truly satisfied by it knowing where it's been? Doubtful unless you're a kinky sort.

Alright, thanks guys. Thanks to your very clear analogies, especially @MaxBunny's, I won't be pulling the trigger on this one.

Just replace the tim and blow out the dirt, if any. Nothing wrong with a mining card, especially being Nvidia. One of mine has been mined on for awhile, along with the other 39 cards that were purchased with it. They all this work. Can’t compare a card to a vehicle that requires maintenance.
