How to choose which programs open on startup

How do I select which programs run on startup?

A long time ago, I was showed how to do it on this forum, it was very simple.

I don't remember where it is, because I am using windows 8, but there is a startup folder, that you put either the .exe, or the program. Haven't done this for a while.

Go to this string in regedit,

Right click, and make a string value, and enter the directory for your program and the .exe file. Like this.

There is a rather small program - Soluto which can do that (to some extent). Install, reboot, it tells you how long it takes and what programs start with your system.

I want to remove programs.

Go to system configuration and the startup tab. Just search it in the start menu.

If you want to add programs, search up %appdata%, go to roaming > Microsoft > Windows > Star Menu > Programs > Startup. Whatever shortcuts you drop into it will start up when windows boots.

oh. well go to run and type msconfig.exe, go to startup tab, and choose the programs you want.

just press Win+R and type msconfig and go to start-up tab if on W7 or below, if on W8 go to task manager and go to start-up tab

Is there a list I can find of every usual windows process and which one I can close and what it does?

Because I see my computer ready to use at 1.6GB. Then it continues to load windows crap till 2.6GB.

Meanwhile my HDD is busy.
