Hello there,

I am streaming here and there on Twitch. My PC is running an i7 6800k at 4.1Ghz and a 1080 Ti.

So I was thinking if it's worth it to upgrade to a delidded and pretested i9 7900x at 4.9Ghz.

Would that increase my gaming performance by a lot, especially while streaming ? Or should I save my money and wait for the next CPU generation ?

Gaming performance on average declines on X299 compared to X99 because of the mesh architecture. Also you wont hit 4.9ghz.

A 5ghz 8700k is an option to consider.

Hmm, I see. But would that be a big increase in performance, going from a 6-core to a 6-core ? :/

Yes cos you get the IPC increase of about 3%? plus 1ghz in clock speed.

Either way you should only upgrade if you feel ur current performance is unsatisfactory.

Well, gaming performance is generally worse on X299 compared to Z370 but not compared to X99. It's also not really about the FPS but about the fact that streaming can really give you a big hit in performance. Also pretested CPUs that are advertised with 4,9ghz can achieve 4,9ghz.

Honestly, if you don't have any lags/massive frame drops or anything right now, I don't see the point in upgrading.

mesh architecture.

Mesh Cache* say architecture sounds way too weird and might even be wrong?

But regardless yes, you see OP Ring Cache which is superior can only work up to 10 cores, since Skylake-X goes up to 18 cores they decided to try out a new Cache system and used it in all the CPUs of x299, a good part reason why the i7 7700k is faster than the i7 7740x, the i7 8700k faster than the i7 7800x and so on...

You should stick to your i7 6800k until Ice Lake mainstream 8c/16t CPUs that will feature 10nm latest IPC cores and still be in Ring Bus.

That is having a gamer/streamer perspective, if you did actual real professional workloads then the i9 7900x certain has its place.

I guess I will stick to waiting then I guess.

I mean, during streaming I lose about 10-20 fps, which is noticable, especially in PUBG.

But I should be able to deal with that.

When can we expect to see Ice Lake ?

Only 2019 probably, or ?

Or will we see the next generation from the x299 platform already this year ?

Ice Lake at first will count only with the 8c/16t CPU on latest everything, the lower core count will remain coffee lake for this year.

You will need a z390 chipset motherboard, both the chipset and processor are expected some time in September/October
