First Time Builder- Case swapping from a prebuilt

Alrighty so first time posting... I never built a pc but after watching many of these videos I want to try it out. I saw the Thermaltake The Tower 900 Computer and it looks super cool. The problem im running into is pricing on all other components.... I used PC Part picker to choose my parts and it came out pretty expensive.... I looked on Best buy and saw the iBUYPOWER i7 desktop and it was only $1,600. I tried to copy the specs but came up quickly short and would end up having to pay hundreds more to have a complete build... I reall y like the case on thermaltake though. Would it make sense to buy the iBUYPOWER i7 desktop and swap the components over to the tower? Is it even possible since it is a prebuilt? I know someimtes prebuilt dont have the same layout or something. Im saving up tax returns to do this so im just looking for help. Thanks!

Usually you'll get more equipment/better equipment for your money when building your own machine, than as you would get when buying prebuild.

 

But it always depends on the Bling and such. Where as the optical gain isn't always the same as whoa that's faster =) 

 

As for moving a prebuild into another case, as long as they use standardized components it should always be possible... It won't be possible for example with different IBM/HP/Dell machines though... they mostly use own designed hardware not keeping to standards... 

 

I personally would never get a prebuild machine... I like to chose my hardware myself =) ... 

 

That Case you mentioned... around here it costs alone around (I roughly round up) 300 bucks... ouch!

iBuyPower stuff is usually standard, but I would recommend a switchover to another PSU since the included PSUs are usually pretty junky.

Yeah, It looks cool to build it, just sucks because i asked over on reddit, but the general response was that buying and building your own pc is cheaper then buying prebuilt. And I was so puzzled because i kept trying to lower the cost but couldnt... Dang, 300 is a lot. I saw it for  220 at Frys and so im trading some games and such to pay off the case as much as i can, thanks for the help!

Rating doesn't matter. I'd recommend CX450/450M/550M at the budget side, SeaSonic Focus or Focus Plus for midrange and Focus Plus Platinum for the higher end

Just got myself a Cooler Master V550. Running those for quite some time... but that PSU is around 100 bucks... and well worth it.

 

Well the seasonic died, so that V550 was the replacement

This is just a "trust" issue... I run the better cooler master PSUs for quite some time... I swapped out the first one after it has done about 8 years nearly 24/7 work... well it wasn't defective but couldn't hold the full 520 watts anymore... Well that's when the first V550 came in... (I think that model is quite dated right now... must have been on the market for a few years).

 

Wifeys machine had the same 520 watts one, which still is good. But we lost a PCIe cable... I contacted their support and they send me one for free

Seasonic as well... I grabbed one of the shitty ones... the one I swapped out last weekend.

 

Same with for example corsair... some are good/decent, others... well good for fireworks but else... hmm

 

And last weekend was the time I found out my local computer parts "höker" only carries crappy PSUs, or well overpriced ones

Any other models? I wouldn't buy it because it's a 7700K...

Don't forget you would lose any warranty you would have with that pre-built by moving the parts over... and also you would have no invoices for the individual components to claim from manufacturer.. so completely no warranty to speak of. That would be a BAD idea IMO.

And as others have mentioned building yourself, though whilst scary the first time does give you some sense of accomplishment (yes I CAN remember that far back, lol). And you would generally get some better components than you would with a pre-built.

that makes a lot of sense. I didnt think about that. Maybe ill just have to bite the bullet and pay the extra, i guess i can uber some extra shifts hahaha

It's a last generation chip with 4 cores and 8 threads when you can get a 8th generation one with 6 cores and 12 threads for same price. Even new i5 8600K slightly beats it.

No worries, if you need any help there are usually guys around to give advice on parts to get, if fact some people like making part lists for people if they name a budget and any specific parts they need also. So like if you definitely wanted a 1070 for instance.
