So, as you can probably tell by the title this is my first time building a PC. Currently I have a 7 year old Mac Pro (mid 2010) that struggles to run Minecraft at 60fps... so I think it's time for a upgrade! Currently I have an overpriced and 1080p @60hz moniter but I plan to get a 1440p @144hz g sync moniter soon, as my new PC will be built around 1440p @144hz. So far I have this build plan

PCPartPicker part list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Cws4XH

I want to be able to play Overwatch on hopefully max settings at 144fps on my 2k moniter. My main question is do I need a 1080 ti? Also the reason I'm going with the Asus motherboard over the As rock z370 extreme 4 is tbh the Aurasync lighting and it's the same story with the Rog Strix 1080. But I have found a build that won't look as nice but uses a 1080 ti so I was just wondering if the ti is needed or if I could stick with the prettier option.

Here is the 1080 ti build:

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/mNYMPs

Also the monster is set to 0 dollars because I'm going to get it later for $400 on Amazon. Thanks!

P.S I should stick with Intel instead of Ryzen right?

Either build is fine. Intel is fine, but AMD is also an option, but if you will be mostly gaming, Intel will probably suit your needs better because of higher single threaded performance. I have a 1080 and can push 1440p, 144Hz at very high or ultra settings on most games. Personally, I would recommend a 1070ti because they are cheaper and with the right choice in card with a good cooler, you may be able to overclock them near 1080 territory.

I got my 1080 before the 1070ti was even a thing and I got it for $500 USD. :)

I'd go for the 8400 build, but get a 1070 Ti and save a bit on the case.

If you do decide to go with the Unlocked Sku build, you will need a much beefier cooler than that Hyper 212 to overclock it.

How about best of both worlds? Power and RGB?

Extra cost is due to the 32GB RAM, plus i Couldn't find a RGB GPU... Well, not one that wouldn't push it to $2000+.

It has 82 CFM rating... there is no issue there...

Great! I think I'll stick with the 1080 because I just like having that little but more power.

As I said to Unimaginative Name I think I want to stick with the 1080 for that little bit of extra power. As for the case I understand that it is a HUGE amount to spend on the case but I really want to have a flashy computer that stands out and lots of unicorn vomit (RGB) as this is my first build that I will probably stick with for like 4-5 years.

Are you sure because Egg-Roll said that the current cooler is fine. Also, based on what people have said I don't think I'm going to be using the 8600l build tbh.

This is kind of a dream build for me and I would definitely go for it if I could afford it but sadly I cannot. ~1500 is the absolute MOST I can cough up. One question, why the 32gb of RAM?

There is no need for 32gbs of ram; that sorta stuff in gaming is for bragging rights. You can get away with 8gb however 16gb is highly recommended!

Out of the two I'd buy #2 - 1080ti ftw

However:

This is what I would do

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/hvYVtJ

Buy this now; down the road get a better case and a second stick of ram to make 16gb's.

The extra CPU and GPU power is invaluable.

I7-7700k@5.1ghz + 1080ti @ 2050mhz + 32gbs Ram + 2TB SSD = CSGO

i7-6700k@4.9ghz + 980ti @ 1501mhz + 16gbs Ram + 1 TB SSD = Backup

i7-3770k@4.8ghz + 680 4gb + 32gbs Ram + 500gb SSD = Retired/Office work

8GB is the absolute minimum 16 is average 32 is becoming standard. I often go over 16GB, I also have a 32GB pagefile, but I'm a extreme case.

Really depends on what they use their computer for, for only gaming yes 16GB is fine but the second you touch video/photo (like adobe products) editing, Chrome, more is better.

For the price I was going for the amount in the 1080 ti setup.

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/bYwTvV $1500 has a 1070 Ti no RGB 32 GB RAM

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/9Fqxhq $1500 has a 1080 Ti no RGB 16 GB RAM (can add more with 2 empty slots)

I should note, Thermaltake makes great cases, PSU idk... Last i read a review from them the fan either died or was noisy, but that was 5 years ago.

If you want RGB there are ways of doing it via "china" from ebay ;) shouldn't cost more than $30 for the whole case.

I say it's fine because i got a P4 651 to OC to 4.8GHz on this thing xD When it hit 5.x it couldn't handle it, post but no boot (windows issue Ubuntu could care less).

https://valid.x86.fr/show_oc.php?id=2589199

It now sits on my 6600k :)

I forget where but Linus was talking about the fins on the air CPUs where thermal dynamics came into play and why smaller fins would dissipate more.

Reason why both my fan and the 212 EVO are good is due to how close the fan is to the heat source. For water the cool liquid might have to pass the GPU which during gaming can get warm, even tho they are insulated they still consume the external heat, that 0.5 increase still makes the cpu 0.5 hotter possibly more. Only way of battling this is custom liquid cooling.

Go for the 1080 then. If you want the unicorn vomit and tempered glass and flashiness, consider the ThermalTake View 21.

Yea, I dont think that one actually comes with a single RGB fan... Looks clean however.

The RGB case I provided however seems like it's actually better w/o RGB lol... has 4 settings or something for the RGB, with no alt settings...

Depends on the model, instead of being unicorn vomit, it might be your vomit... But yea, USA seems to have better pricing and options than us Canadians... The biggest downside is the additional costs associated with it, But i do like that case you gave :)

The case I gave is a perfect example of a nice looking picture but if seen in person it quickly becomes WTF.
