4K: Is it worth the bother yet?

steven_thebear

So I'm in a bit of a unique situation in regards to my current set up for gaming, and I'm looking for some advice regarding upgrading my current monitor. I've had my current monitor since 2012 (http://www.lg.com/hk_en/monitor/lg-D2343P-home) and it's served me well as a 1080p IPS display. But I recently upgraded my PC and upgraded my PS4 to PS4 Pro, and have been looking for a better monitor since I use both on the same setup. But I really can't decide what direction to go in. Since one of the Pro's main features is 4K content, I decided to have a look at 4K monitors in various places, and honestly, I'm not particularly impressed with any of the ones that are affordable (£300-400), mainly because in my opinion, they represent pretty poor value when compared to their TV counterparts, which offer much bigger screen sizes and HDR (which I would personally love to see) along with better screens for the same prices. Additionally, most of them seem to have TN panels, which I admittedly don't particularly want. I considered 1440p monitors, but apparently, the general consensus across the board is that 1080p on 1440p looks dreadful (since the Pro doesn't support 1440p). The other option I've toyed around with is 144Hz monitors, but I've never actually seen 144hz in motion before so I really don't know if it would be worth spending the money on it. Also, it should be worth noting that I don't play games competitively, I mainly play single player games with the odd game of battlefield 1 or titanfall 2 every now and again.

I was just wondering about you guys think, and if there is something I am missing or not considering. Should I wait until 4K monitors get cheaper again or offer better specs? I apologise if I'm a bit of a noob at this.

Thanks for your time.

I think 1440p 144hz is good. I have 4 60fps monitor and it is good for work, but 60 hz is less than 144.

I play esports games and don't care about my 144hz display

Your choice looks like it's between these ones, not sure if the 399 one is much better

4k is likely worth it because you're unlikely to need to replace it for a while.

I have that monitor and thats a pretty good monitor. It is ips and with low latency, but the max brightess is a bit too low.

Good for gaming? Not sure I like the bezel if I was being super picky

Pretty much all the IPS displays are going to be the same, and perfectly fine for gaming, just check out some reviews for it

but if you don't need a monitor right now hold off until you find a deal on a 32" 4k IPS display

Yeah good, but the 1070 struggles in 4k so i play most of my games at 1440p.

Should probably just run them at 1080 with perfect scaling, or use the resolution scale in games

doesn't 1440p look a little off running at full screen?

After playing a couple games at 4k with HDR, I can say yes. Oh, yes. It's gorgeous. If you have the hardware to push it, then yes.

For FPS games, going from 60 hertz to 144 is a game changer, it feels unreal using 144hz for the first time. The sweet spot imo is 1440p and 144hz for sure.

I wouldn't upgrade to 4k unless I had 120hz atleast, and god knows how long we will be waiting for hardware to support 4k at high refresh rates.

4K is very great for TV and it is a must now if you plan to purchase new TV, you see very different quality output on it even for upscaling 1080p contents look much sharpen in 4K TV than Full HD TV.

But for PC gaming, better stick with 1440p or 1080p now. Wait maybe next year or another year for better performance. Now is not time for it yet as GPU is not handle it with extra power yet.
